Few Winners of the Two Thousand Guineas Have 1 Repeated in the Blue Ribbon Fixture at Epsom. ■ a The English racing public is a trifle puzzled just now as to whether Minoru. King Edwards colt, is an out and out smasher and whether the result of the Two Thousand iuineas provided a real line on the Derby. Minoru won rather easily, and there I was an air of genuineness to the victory in the fact that beniml the royal candidate was Bayardo. the champion two-year-old and winter favorite for the Epsom event: but though Minor.i is now prime choice ] over Bayardo and a short figure In the betting, the j hard-headed critics pay no great attention to the | seeming reversal of form, for they point to a long ,. list of real good ones which, on former occasions. , won the Guineas and made a very i oor showing in the Derby. As recently as last year was this theory demon- « strated in August Belmonts colt. Norman III., which , won the Guineas in faultless style and only made a poor fifth at Kpsom. A mile from home the I American bone was showing the way. and even when J they swung around Tattenham Corner he was in the , van, but hi- gradually fell to the rear in the gallop A home. The Two Thousand Guineas was instituted 101 j years ago. and then, as today, it was run over the 1 course at Newmarket — the Bowley Mile. This How- , ley Mile is the first mile of what is known as I ••across the flat." a straightaway of a mile and a J quarter in length and one of the graudest pieces of . laeaac turf in the world. Were it necessary a hun- dred horses could be started abreast and with room J to spare. Of course, the race has always more or j less of a bearing on the Derby, for it yearly affords a chance to see the first airing of the classic colts. , Yet it is remarkable in this long span of years that , onlv twenty winners of the Guineas took the Derby. Five colts and three fillies started in the iuitial j fixture. This was in UN, and in 1M4 the One Thousand was inaugurated. The first winner was Wizard, by Black Sorcerer, and when it came to the i running of the Derby. The Tope beat the Guineas winner by a neck. First to win the two big events was Sir Charles Bunburys Smolensko in ISIS, and in the first fifty years of tie- Guineas but four other horses duplicated the feat of Smolensko. These were the Duke of Rutlands Cadland in 1S2S. Lord Jerseys Bay Mid-dleton in is:ii. Cotlierstonc in 1S4:: and West Australia in 1S55. the last mentioned being the lirst of the triple crown winners. During the last fifty years there have been fifteen winners, notably Isinglass. MM; I.adas. 1S94: Galtee More. 1897; Flying Fox. tam: Diamond Jubilee. 1900; Rock Sand. 190:.. and St. Ainant. 1904. The most hollow victories recorded for the Two Thousand were Macgregor in 1S70 and Snrefoot. just twenty years later, and neither finished in the first three at Kpsom. Scot Frees Guineas in 1SS4 was won in a runaway fashion, but he was not nominated for the big event. Of those animals whicli won at Newmarket in clean style and which afterward realized expectations, a few stand out. such as Isinglass. Galtee Vine, Common and Ormonde. A summary of th.- two races for the last fifty years shows that fifteen have won the Derby, six have lHen second, a similar number third and five fourth. All the others were unplaced.
