ROUGH RIDING AT LAT0NIA. Track Conditions Worst in Long Time, but the Favorites Keep on Winning. Cii-.clnnati. 0.. May 27. — Kxcepting that todays starters in the majority of the races were of better class than those which performed yesterday, the sport did not show much improvement. Probably never before has the oval here been in such frightful shape. A heavy storm this morning made matters worse. During racing hours the threatening clouds broke away and present indications point to improved weather conditions Several layers discontinued operations today tie-cause of losses sustained yesterday. Speculation, because of the bad state of the track and the short odds that have lieen limited, has fallen off since onenlng day. and the fifteen layers in line, including the two fielders, were amply sufficient to take care of the wants of those eager to wager. A feature of todays racing was that live favorites and a second choice captured the purses, causing the liookniakers further losses. Todays attendance showed an increase over yesterdays and the crowd Ik-ciiiiic enthusiastic toward the close of the day. Kspecially was this true of the last race, when Lillian Hay. Meadowgrass and Camel finished noses apart. Thus was some who were inclined to disagree with the official placing. The thill mm III dash, second on the card, was the best offering. It resulted in a victory for Sea Swell, backed almost to the exclusion of the others. There was considerable crowding during the first three furlongs, for which Taplin. 011 Marbles, was held to blame. Charlie Kastman was the chief sufferer. No complaint being lodged, the officials let the incident pass without action. In the opening race there was also a good hit of roughing and it served to defeat Bye White. Troxler. on HSi Co.. the winner, was the offender. He pulled sharply actum to the inner rail soon after the start and before getting clear of Eye White. The latter lost considerable ground and was knocked far back, but Mountains claim of foul was not allowed. Merrick scored in the third race In hollow stvle as the Shortest-priced winner of the afternoon. E. T. Shipp furnished the chief contention, with the rest of the starters trailing distantly. V. Bowers good ride was largely responsible for Ketchcinikes success in the fourth race. The extreme outsider. Usury, showing sudden improvement. almost succeeded in lauding. Tom Holland had to be much the best to win the fifth race, as he was in a rear ixisition in the early part and was forced to travel wide throughout. He succeeded, however. In wearing his opponents down in the last sixteenth, much to the lov of the favorite players, who had been scoring right down the Hue. Tie closing raee gave Barney Schreiber his first purse of the season in this section, when Lillian Bay managed to stagger home a nose in advance of Meadow -grass, with Camel right there as well. Warlichl and Blate ilass will Ik- shipped back here on Wednesday next after they fulfill engagements at Belmont Park. Owner Young will depart tonight for New York to witness the running of Warfield in the 130.000 Belmont Stakes. J. Johnston and E. Ilorton are due with their horses from Norfolk tomorrow-. W. O. Banner was a visitor this afternoon, en route from Toronto to Nashville, where he goes to prepare his yearlings for shipment preparatory to their sale. Jeff Bernstein, which was injured at Louisville, is coming along in good shape and will lie a starter as soon us the track becomes good. Jockey Pages apprentice allowance will expire on Saturday nexJ:. Wiiitergrcen is progressing nicely, but it will be more than a mouth before he is again in shape to face the barrier. Intimate triends of Alphie Fontelieu are in receipt of word from him that he has quit bookmakiug and will go Into business in Iberville. La., his home city. Lillian Hays mile in l:52i is the slowest recorded on this track in years.
