FORT GARRY STAKE WINNER COLT THAT HAD BEEN RUNNING DISAPPOINTINGLY FINALLY SHOWS GOOD FORM. Takes Stanley Produce Stakes from Ordinary Band at Woodbine— Red River Beats Good Sprinters in Handicap Feature of Program. Toronto. Ont.. June 3. — The Stanley Produce Stakes, patterned after the Futurity and calling for Canadian breds. was the feature race of the program offered at Woodbine this afternoon. The Ontario Jockey Club annually adds ,300 to this event, a liberal sum indeed, considering the caliber of the field which tlie race ordinarily brings to the post. As additional attractions there were offered the Newmarket Handicap and the Lion Heart Steeplechase. A majority of the finishes found the winners with comfortable leads. Wild Fire and Bobbie Kean being the exception. Both of these horses scored by only a head. Fort Garry, the Dyment colt that bad proved a disappointment in all of his previous starts this spring, was the easiest sort of a winner in the Stanley Produce Stakes. He was an added starter and found no trouble in beating horses that had been finishing In front of him. The distance and difference in the weight allotment doubtless had much to do with the result. Shore Lark, favorite In the race, never showed a liking for a distance, while Desert Star was asked to pick up twenty pounds from his previous race. Different tactics were also pursued with Fort Garry today. Mentry was given instructions to wait witli him ami he trailed Desert Star and Shore Lark for six furlongs. In the stretch this pair tired and Fia-t Garry closed with a rush, drew away Into an easy lead In Hie final furlong and won by live lengths. Like Foil Garry he avoided the early pace and. closing with a burst of reserved speed, won easily. The Hon Heart Steeplechase was a hotly contested affair all the way. Several of the nine starters alternated in allowing the wav at some stage of the running. The final drive found Expansionist. Steve Lane and John Dillon fighting it out. Expansionist proved gamest and won by a scant length from Steve Lane. Judge Nolan was the only one of the lot that came to grief. He lost his rider at the second jump. Red River and Fxpansionist were winning choices, a majority of the other events going to outsiders. Wild Fire, winner of the second race, made a sensational showing. After leaving the post in a tangle and looking hopelessly out of it the first quarter, she closed a big gap and. finishing with a great burst of speed, just managed to get up in time to beat out the favorite. Compton. In the stretch Wild Fire bore over against Compton and carried him down to the inside rail, froldstein claimed foul but it was not allowed by the stewards. William Garth shipped all of his horses except Busy and Stellaland to Montreal tonight. These two will remain over until Saturday to fill stake engagements at Woodbine. They will be sent on to Blue Bonnets Saturday. Garth has arranged to take three or four of J. E. Seagrams horses to Montreal. The Virginia turfman has released Dupee from the contract he held on his services and has arranged with K. Heider to do his riding in future. W. F. Presgrave sent a carload of Thomas Clydes horses to Montreal tonight ami the balance will leave on Saturday. Tomorrow EL Bondy will ship Chilla. while T. S. Childs will send Vox Populi and King of Mist and Charles Bowman six of his lot. James McLennan, who will act as one of the assistants in the secretarys office, left tonight. Before leaving he received thirty entries from local horsemen for the opening day. R. L. Thomas has purchased the contract on the apprentice. Stanley Davis, and the lad will join his stable at Montreal. Courtier, which looked to have the Stanley Produce Stakes at his mercy, developed fever overnight and was scratched. Touchwood was sent out in the entries for the Lion Heart Steeplechase through error. He was ineligible and was not carded ou the program. The thirty-four lniokmakers summoned to appear before the court tomorrow will be called upon to defend the charge that they have transgressed the law by standing in one place and accepting wagers. It is not likely, however, that anything will come of the prosecution.
