JAMES R. KEENES CALICO PONY. Trainer James Itowe continues to send his famous calico |iony out with James R. Keenes horses when they appear on the track for preliminary gallops before races, but the pony no longer races the last furlong with any horse be may happen to accompany, as he did in the days of Peter Pan. Ballot. Colin and Celt. Metropolitan turf folk reniemlier when this pony beat Pet.-r Fan the last three -eighths of his preliminary for the Carlton Stakes at Gruveseiid in 1907 and how he beat Colin the last furlong of his preliminary for the Belmont of last season. Notwithstanding that the pony does more work than any two race horses In the Keene stable, lie keeps as fat as a butterbcll. But he is not as sound as lie used to be. A slow gallop sets him to wheezing and ltowe does not care to set too severe a task before him. The Keene stable could not well afford to lose this paay, The stout little roan has an important place in the establishment of the vice-chairman of the Jockey Cluh. He has such a winning wnv that all Mr. Keeues good race horses are fond of him. and several of them throw tils when he is not almut to keep them company. The roan pony exercises rare discrimination in his choice of friends. He nas made a pal of Sweep this spring, and it begin-to look as though he has selected a side partner of the first water. i
