RACING FLOURISHES AT VICTORIA. British Columbia Venture a Success Mile Track to Be Built for Next Seasons Use. Victoria. B. C. July J. The initial meeting of the Victoria Country Club has been attended with gratifying success to date and racing holds out the promise of becoming firmly established as , one of the most popular pastimes of British Columbia. The dallv attendance at the Victoria track averages close to 2.000 ami the speculative side of the sport has been eminently satisfactory. On Derby day one book in the ring handled 5,000. The management is counting on building a mile track for the meeting which will follow next summer ns a matter of course. Irving H. Wheatcroft, owner of the St. James Stable and stud, is taking a prominent part in the plans for the oxiiansion of the sport in the province. He was active in raising the funds which permitted the construction of the new track which will be put into commission at Vancouver next month. This track is patterned after tlie Woodbiue course at Toronto and will have ample accommodations of every description. Roltert Leighton. manager of the Victoria track, will fill a similar position at Vancouver.
