Threatened thiindersqualls failed to keep the customary week-day crowd away from Shecpshead today. A highly attractive midweek card was offered ly the Coney Island Jockey Club, the principal attraction lieing the twonty-lifth running of the Swift, a seven-furlougs race for three-year-olds. Tlie field named over night comprised litz Herbert. Fashion Plate. Ktherial, Practical and Koyal Captive. .S. C. Hildreths great threc-year-ohl was :i conspicuous absentee. being withdrawn, to the general disapKintment of the public. Of the remaining quartette of starters Fashion Plate, the eventual winner and recently a well-backed third choice in the Suburban, was practically ignored in the betting, most of the support centering on Ktherial and Royal Captive. The Oneck Stables good colt was thought by experts to be the dominant factor in the race and everybody wondered after It was all over how lie could have been over looked. Ktherial. a high-class two-year-old, has been in poor form this season and the plunge that ileveloiicd on the KIkwood Park Stables representative in the Swift Stakes was the sensation of the afternoon in a speculative way. Ktherial was kept out of serious contention so long that no one gave him a thought for half the journey. His closing effort was as late as it was impressive, and it Is predicted that lie will be, an important factor from now on in good company. Dalmatian furnished the means .for jockey Powers to show what a superior horseman he is. The western jockeys powerful finish brought victory for the Hildreth. colors in the Surf Stakes. For the entire length of the long stretch Dalmatian, Sandrian and Schoolmarm battled for supremacy. They finished as they began, inches apart, witli the 7.000 spectators cheering them on in. a frenzy of excitement. Powers riding and the demonstration that followed was a conspicuous feature of the afternoons sport. The tabled history of the Surf Stakes since 1100 is as follows: Year. Winner. Wt. Jockey. Val. Nimbus. The "Dig Train" led for six furlongs witli all his old-time impressiveness, then faltered and stopped. He hobbled off the course seemingly a complete wreck, to the regret of all true sportsmen present. A steward of the Jockey Club remarked today that "nothing could be more convincing of a successful future for the turf than the sale of yearlings which began yesterday. The confidence of the buyers is almost a guarantee that tl: sport is going along about as well as the most optimistic could expect." The Newcastle Stable is being strengthened and promises to be a formidable factor In racing this season. Francis C Bishop is again Imsv witli horses, together with his partner. Andrew Miller.
