ROMAlCE OF THE ENGLISH TURF. Lord Rosebery appears to have laid the founda Hon of more than one turf fortune :is well as bis own. For a short time be ceased to run horses, and thus got rid of .Bona Vista, which won for Sir C. I. Rose the Two Thousand Guineas, and sired for, him Cyllene. winner of the great two-year-old race at Sandown. the Ascot Gold Cup and many other lirst-class races, being finally sold for the largo sum of .0O0. Still greater results, writes John Corlett in the Sporting Times, have lxen achieved with the stud of the late Sir Daniel Cooper, which rests its fame mostly on Footlight. a mare by Oromornc. her dam Paralfin. by Blair Atliol. out of Paradigm. Lord Lyon and Achievement were son and daughter of Paradigm. Footlight was bred bv Lord Rosebery In 1S7C. Her dam. Paraffin, was the last foal to live of Paradigm, which was shot in 1872. The career of Paradigm is full of romance, apart from the fact that her son. Lord Lyon, won the great triple event of lSOU. and her daughter. Achievement, was the greatest winner of the following season, as she had been as a two-year-old. General Pearson was an old Sixteenth Lancers man. and fought at Aliwal. Wanting a hack for his wife, he purchased for the small sum of eighteen guineas a thoroughbred filly called Ellen Home. This filly on being iut to the stud produced Paradigm, whose career bristles witii winners. Including King at Arms. .Man at Arms, Rouge Dragon. Panoply. Blue Mantle, Gardevisure. Lord Lyon. Achievement, Hatchment and Noyre Tauren. Notwithstanding the many great winners that Paradigm threw, it is on Paraffin, her last surviving produce, that the fame of the race now rests. Paraffin had several owners, James Dover, Captain Ma-chell and Mr. Chaplin. After being beaten in a match by M. Lefevres Lulsette. -Mr. Chaplin let her go to Lord Rosebery, who won a minor race with her and thou put her to the stud. Her second foal was Footlight. by Cremorne. and her next Illu minata. by Roslcrueian. It was with descendants of llluminata that Lord Rosebery won the Derby with Ladas and Cicero. Tho estate of Sir Daniel Cooper was recently proved at something over 00,000. The produce of Footlight and her daughters brought in nearly that. Footlight "was sold In the first place to Caledon Alexander, who, as a rule, iwtd "cats meat" prices. At the sale she was bought liy Lord Rosslyn. and at the disposal of his stud Sir Daniel Cooper bought her for ,750.
