DISQUALIFIED AT WINDSOR PURSE TAKEN FROM DR. WALDO BRIGGS AFTER HE HAD FINISHED FIRST. Jockey Burns Guilty of Such Palpable Foul That Judges Do Not Wait for Protest in Taking Action Offending: Jockey Suspended. Detroit. Mich., August 9. The disqualification of Dr. Waldo Briggs after the Schreiber colt had finished first in a tight lit witli Vox Populi served as the chief incident of the racing at Windsor this afternoon. Jockey Burns, on Dr. Waldo Rriggs, was making a desperate effort during the stretch run to retain his lead over the fast coming Vox Populi. and was applying his whip frantically. In the last sixteenth Rriggs began boring out and forced Vox Populi toward the outer fence. Hums also managed to give Vox Populi several cuts near the end. which retarded him and enabled his own mount to win by a head. The spectators at once instituted a clamor for his disqualification. The judges were Of the opinion that the foul was palpable and did not wait for a protest to he made by Dennison. the rider of Vox: Populi, before setting Dr. Waldo Rriggs back and awarding the purse to Vox Populi. The disqualification had the effect of moving .Martin Doyle and Michael Angelo into second and third positions respectively. They also suspended jockey Hums for six racing days for all but his contract employer. J. McLaughlin. Jr. The decision of todays ordinary card was affected by defeats for most of the favorites. Their failure cost the form followers large sums. Some of the winners were smartly supported, however, and the twenty-four layers did not have an orerly profitable day. Poor riding on the part of G.. Burns was responsible for Hyperion Il.g defeat by Ida D. and Tre-margo in the opening dash. Hyperion II. was a rapidly receding favorite, and Burns came in for a good deal of adverse criticism for his handling of the horse. There was a big plunge on Blagg In the race, hut whatever chance he might have had went glimmering when he failed to leave the barrier with the others. J. W. Schorrs newly acquired Paul Davis landed tlie purse in the second race in. commanding Ktvlf -from ten others. Hums took him into a long lead after going a quarter and he only had to canter through the stretch run to win as his rider pleased. Tho General Armstrong, which ruled favorite, failed to get any portion of, the purse. Colloquy had to be much the best in the five and a half furlongs sprint to get home a scant margin in front of Toy Boy. J. Lee Ivad her in close quarters soon after tlie start and only found clear sailing iu the last furlong. Lawrence I. Daley, which was making his first start in nearly a year, gave a sparkling performance in landing third place. He will improve and seems destined to rank with tho best here. Johnnie Blake, a stable companion to Lawrence P. Daley, had little difficulty in wearing down Fulford, the favorite of tlie fifth race. The closing dash was only a romp for Beau Rrummel. Owner J. O. Milam was. much disturbed this morning when, he learned that his useful racer, Merrick, had injured himself In a mysterious manner during the night. Tlie information he gathered from his stable hands Inclines him to the opinion that someone obtained entrance to Merricks stall during tlie night and tried to poison the horse. The animal began acting strangely about three oclock, frequently throwing himself to the tloor and against the sides of his stall, injuring himself considerably. Woolcasta. in tlie next stall, exhibited the same symptoms. Woolcasta is somewhat similar to .Merrick iu appearance. Owners are generally much wrought up over the matter and If the perpetrators are icauglit it will be likely to go extremely hard with them. J. W. Schorr is in quest of promising material to recruit a powerful racing stable. It is his belief that racing will again prosper in the near future. He purchased today the promising two-year-olds. Hob Co. and Paul Davis, from A. Rrowu for the reported sum of ,000. Paul Daris won at the first asking for his new owner. Bookmaker Bradfieid had to suspend operations after the lifth race today on account of heavy losses that he sustained during the day. The disqualification of Dr. Waldo Briggs cost him nearly ,000. Tlie weird ride that jockey Hufuagcl gave Prince Imperial iu the second race caused the judges to have him before them. He was given a lecture and warned that repetition would mean his instant suspension. Jockey J. Lee was suspended for live days hi- the starter for his impudence while at the post on Colloquy. J. W. -May shipped Bob R. and Turf Star to Saratoga this afternoon.
