WINNERS OF THE TRAVERS STAKES 4 Having first been run as far back as in 1864, the Travers is the longest-established race for tlirce-year-olds of this country, the Rolmont Stakes coming next with a record of a first running in 1S07. It was named in honor of V. H. Travers, one of the founders of racing at Saratoga and an ardent admirer of racing, besides being a great wit. ready sneaker and a power in Wall street. The first Trarers fell to Kentucky, a horse that many held to be the best son of Lexington and a great racer lie was, a sprinter, a stayer, a weight carrier and abont all that Is desirable in a race horse. Resides taking the Travers when a three-year-old, he won the Saratoga Cup in 1855 and !Si5. Other famous horses of long ago that won the Travers Stakes were Ruthless, Gienelg. Kingfisher, Harry Rassett, Joe Daniels. Tom Rowling. Duke of Magenta and Falsetto, while in more modern days such stars as Inspector H., Sir Dixon, Henry of Navarre, Rlues.
