Detroit Mich., August 12. Changed track conditions resulted in the riddling of todays card bv withdrawals and also accounted for upsets that at- tended the running of several races. The feature race, a handicap at six furlongs, went to Merrick, whicli drew out in the stretch to win as his- rider elected, after following Smiley Corhetts speedy pace for the first half mile. Sir Edward outstayed Charlie Eastman for second mouey. Smiley Corbett was accorded smart support, but after showing a high turn of speed during the early stages, lagged badly and linished beaten off. The crowding that came soon after the start was responsible for March-monets failure to Iks a forward contender at any time. The remaining six races had selling conditions attached and were contested by horses of ordinary class. The mile and a half .race was marked by the best contest of the afternoon, the six starters running closely grouped for the major iiart of the journey. Doubt and Oberon ultimately drew away from the others and fought out the issue, the former winning by a scant length, while John E. McMillan lauded third money in a tight lit with Dnnvegan. Favorite players started the day inauspiciously when Jack Straw disappointed in the opening race and failed to land any portion of the purse. Robert Powell, an outsider, spreadeagled his opposition to win from Tortuous. The erratic Ikiuivcs was in a running mood this afternoon and led from start to finish -in the second race, with Lot tit Creed second and Howard Oots recent acquisition. Pinkard, third. Orphan Lad. one of the best backed starters of the afternoon, failed in the third and ran far below his best effort. Elder, one of the extreme outsiders, won the race in a romp from Iedro and Iliacko. CMinot. in the fifth, was the first favorite to win. He cantered home In front of Youthful, the latter lieing at a long price. : Posing, winner of the closing dash, was the only other favorite to score. The Waiuwright mare led throughout, but had to be , hustled near the end to outstay Nettle Traver. Pinkard was bought by Howard Oots from S. K. Hughes previous to the running of the second race.
