TORONTO MEETING COMES TO A CLOSE. Brilliant Gathering Sees Azo Win Ontario Jockey Club Cup and Penn the Earl Grey Stakes. Toronto. Out.. September 25. The autumn meeting of the Ontarip Jockey Club came to aiv end this afternoon in a blaze of glory. The largest crowd of the meeting witnessed the decision of the best program ever offered at Woodbine. It was a brilliant gathering, with many men prominent in the piovince present. The program included the Earl Grey Stakes, at one mile, for two-3-ear-olds. the Ontario Jockey Club Cup. at two miles sad a quarter, and the Hcndrio Challenge Cup. a steeplechase over the full course of three miles. The Ontario Jockey Club Cup race proved a stirring struggle. The finish of a strenuous stretch drive between Cave Adsum and Azo left the latter winner by a neck. In the early stages Jeanette M. and Old Honesty made the pace, with Azo a distant trailer. After they had gone a mile and a half the field bunched, and at the head of the homestretch it was hard to forecast the winner, but in the final drive Azo and Cave Adsum drew away from the others. Like the Ontario Cup, the steeplechase was a stirring contest and the finish brought the vast throng in the grandstand to their feet. Every one of the seven starters, with the exception of Dacra, looked to have a chance at some time during the running. The Colt entry. Thistlcdale. dashed to the front when the break came and. fencing in faultless fashion, led his field until the last jump. In the early stages Sir Wooster and Waterway followed the leader closely, but in the last lap Sobell and Ray brought Fincastle and Byzantine up. and. going to the last jump, the trio were on almost even terms. In the final drive; Fincastle proved gamest and finished first, a length in advance of Byzantine. Besides ,000 that the club added, a massive silver cup went to the winner and a beautiful pin to the rider of the winner. The Schorr stable furnished the winner in the Earl Grey Stakes in Penn. which good colt was making his maiden effort at the meeting. Far out of it the first half mile. Penn closed with a great stretch run that carried Hiini past the favorite. Amelia Jenks. in the final drive. Penn was ridden bv Guv Burns and ran coupled with Paul Davis as the Sciiorr entry. E. II.
