DARLING WINS STAKE RACE BEATS ALL RED BY SCANT MARGIN IN MON. CRIEFS FEATURE CONTEST. Aspirin Continues . His Winning Career, Making it k Six Straight Eddie Dugan Reaches Jackson- Jj ville to Ride Dr. Duenner in Derby. Jacksonville, Fla.. March 29. The Palatka Selling Stakes, a sprint affair at three-quarters of a mile, was offered as a feature at Moncrief. Park this afternoon, and it brought out one of the largest fields that has gone to the post in a stake here this winter, eleven facing the barrier. --They were a well-matched lot and the race furnished a stirring finish, in which Darling was first home by a neck. Darling was one of the outsiders in the betting, was ridden by Hopkins and was a keen contender from the start. In the early running she trailed tlie speedy Danfield and took the lead entering the homestretch. In the final furlong All Red closed stoutly but just failed to get up. Eagle Bird was third, only a length away and a length in advance of Scrimmage. The latter was crowded out of contention at the start and closed a gap of ten or twelve lengths. It was a disastrous day for the books, as live favorites scored. Jockey T Koerner piloted three of them Rye Straw, Golden Pearl and Naughty Lad. Rye Straw spreadeagled his company, but Koerner was forced to finish desperately on the other two to win by tho smallest of margins. American Girl, winner of the two-year-old race, was boosted 05 over her entered price of ,000 by R. D. Williams, but was protected and bought in by her owner, Luke Le Blond. Aspirin scored Ids sixth straight victory for Capt. P. M. Walker when he beat a band of shifty nillers in tlie third race. Aspirin was forced to overcome early interference, but scored with something in reserve. Nat Byer and J. K. Frayllng will leave for Norfolk on Sunday with the Randolph horses. J. W. Bnrttschell will also leave on the same day with the string of Sam Louis for the same place. Wj P. Burch received word from Samuel Ross this morning that August Belmont had given jockey Eddie Dngan permission to come here to ride Dr. Duenner in the American Derby to be run next Saturday. Dugan arrived tonight -from Garnett, S. P.. and probably will bo -seen lii the saddle tomorrow. The management announced that Saturdays program would- be made up of eight races and that the horses would be called to the post for the opening race at 2 oclock. Messenger Boy was given his final preparation for the Derby between races this afternoon. The colt worked a mile and a quarter in 2:12, the fractional time being 24J, 50, 1:10.?. 1:44 and 2:12J. Eugene Lutz, his owner, was well pleased with the move and announced that tho colt would be :i starter, no matter what the condition of the track might be. Frank Regan and Ed Pureell shipped their horses to Gravesend this morning. Before leaving Mr,. Regan transferred the horses owned by O. L. Richards to E. Peters. M. OConnor, who has been under contract to F. J. . Pons, has been released anil, will ride as a free lance for the rest of the meeting. This boy will ride for the stable of P. S. P. Randolph at Norfolk.
