J. E. WIDENERS INVITATION MEETING. New York, August 31. Entry blanks for the one-day race meeting at the Lynnewood Farm of Joseph E. Widener have lieen issued. This one day of sport is conducted at Elkins Park, Pa., and it is one of the most delightful of the invitation racing functions of the year. Mr. Widener each seasou goes to no end of expense to make the racing wortli while, and from time to time has had this or that feature to make the day at his farm one long to be remembered. For the coming meeting Thursday, October 5, has been chosen, and there are seven races down for decision. Four of these races are steeplechases and the remaining three are on the Hat. Such a program affords a chance for a great many horses, and it is assured that each race will be well filled. The Coligny Steeplechase and the Lynnewood will eacli have an added value of 00. making them truly important races. The Coligny is over a two-mile course under handicap conditions, and the Lynnewood is at two miles and a half, with penalties and allowances. In this last named race there is also offered a 00 trophy, which must be won twice by the same owner before it becomes his property. Then there is a steeplechase for officers of the United States Army. It is over a two mile and a half course for horses, the property of the army or of the officers, and they are to be ridden by officers. The purse in this race is 00, and a piece, of plate is hung up for the rider of the winner. Much has been said of these races already. They have steadily grown in favor and it is one of the events that is sure of a big field of starters. The other steeplechase on the program is known as the Cheltenham and it is for qualified hunters over the two and a half miles course. For it a purse of 00 is offered as well as a piece of plate. For the flat runners the first offering is six furlongs for all ages. The purse is 00 added, and there are special weights.., with an allowance of live lxmiids for maidens. A mile race for three-year-olds and upward, to be ridden by gentlemen riders, has 00 added, with a piece of plate to the rider of the winner. At the end of the card there is offered a nice of a mile and a quarter on the fiat for hacks and hunters. This race has 00 added. The entries for these various races will close with Frank J. Bryan at 5 and S East Forty-sixth street, Wednesday. September 20. The officials for the meeting are: Joseph E. Widener, Thomas Hitchcock, Henry J. Morris and William M. Kerr, stewards; William P. Iiiggs, judge; Frank J. Bryan, starter; Herman P. Conk-ling, clerk of the scales: W. F. Presgrave, paddock judge: Frank J. Bryan, clerk of the course, and J. II. Lewis, Jr., timer.
