KING JAMES GOES TO STUD S. C. HILDKETHS FAMOUS STAKE WINNER IS SOLD FOR 5,000. II. T. Oxnard Purchases Son of Plaudit and Unsightly for His Blue Ridge Breeding Farm Horse Retires Winner of Over 00,000. Now. York. September 19. Racing men learned today that King James, one of the stars of the S. O. llihlreth stable, has been purchased by II. T. Oxnard for his Blue Ridge Farm at- Upperville, Va. The price is said to have been 5,000. King James won many important stakes during his career and was still in winning form when S. O. Hildrcth retired his stable last month. In fact lie has an unbeaten record to mark his final year in training. King James contrived to win but one race when a two-year-old, but it was a good one. He is a Hiinyar horse In his paternal and maternal lines of descent, fast and a great weight carrier and, withal, u stayer to which no route possessed any terrors. His solitary win when a two-year-old was in the valuable Trcmout, in which he won 3,250 for his owner. As a three-year-old his only victory in a stake race was when he won the rich Annual Champion, his other three successes lieing in purses at Belmont Park, Saratoga and Santa Anita. But so industriously raced was he and of such bulldog courage and persistence was ho that he was always poking his head in among the leaders, no matter how good they were, and to such purpose that lie was second or third in such great races as the First Special, Century Stakes, Empire City Handicap, Travcrs Stakes, Lawrence Realization, Advance Stakes, Coney Island Jockey Club Stakes, Suburban Handicap, Brooklyn Derby, Belmont Stakes, Withers Stakes and Crotona Handicap, the result being that lie won in second and third money alone more than many good race horses of the year amassed in any way. In 100! lie was a champion, indeed. He won in sifecession the Burns Handicap. California Handicap, Speed Handicap, Metropolitan Handicap, Toronto Cup and Brooklyn Handicap. Long-distance racing j was his specialty, but in illustration of his verea- tility he took up 142 pounds and won the Speed Handicap of three-quarters of a mile at Santa Anita in ltllj. 45oslr,-is those named ,he has numerous other stakes to his credit and his racing record, in full is as follows: King James, b. h. 1905, by Elaudit Unsightly.
