NOTES. OF THE TURF. There are exactly 477 horses at the Coeur dAlene track. The condition of James R. Keene, who recently underwent an operation in England, "is showing steady improvement, according to announcements hiade by his physicians. Joseph E.. Davis, Richard Mortimer, Jr., H. W. Warner, C. F. Clark and other owners will ship their horses from the Long Island tracks to participate in the Interstate Fair races, next week, at Trenton, N. J. Mclvor is reported, to have been working well at Douglas Park for-trainer John Walters, most of whose time is how taken up in handling a half dozen yearlings he lias in training, and one. or two of them look like the sort which develop into stake-winning two-year-olds. The R. T. Wilsons horses that are now at Saratoga Springs in charge of foreman Patrick Dwyor will be shipped to Belmont Park about October 15. Two old horses are in the lot and the rest are yearlings. The dozen youngsters have been broken and "worked over the Oklahoma course at Saratoga. Despite the fact that the gates have not been thrown open at Relmont Park this year, the magnificent plant has lost none of its attractiveness from a picturesque point. The lawns, privet hedges, trees, plants and roads are in singularly good condition. The main course has been treated by Superintendent William A. Gorman as in days agone. Light harrowing and the u.se of levelers have rendered it fast and safe. Several horses have worked from the half mile post to the stand in better than 4S seconds recently. The success of the running races as an attraction at the Kentucky State Fair, at Louisville, this year will result In the legislature being asked for an additional appropriation for this class of sport. Next year also the thoroughbred will not be overlooked in the premium class, and an attractive program of this sort will be on the card. It was only owing to one of the 00 purses for harness horses beln" declared off that it was possible this season to have two running races each afternoon on four days. The appropriation for running races was miserly, being only 1911.sh00.
