LATONIAS EXCELLENT PROSPECTS. Pick of Western Horses Ready to Engage in Meeting Which Opens Next Monday. Cincinnati, O.. October 12. Latonias track superintendent, John M. Keegan, is busily engaged in getting everything about the plant spick and span for the opening of the racing next Monday. The improvement of the paddock, including a new covered walk from the betting shed, has been completed. A liberal application of paiut and whitewash on the buildings and fences has added to the attractiveness of the plant. Little has been done to the track proper since the close of racing last July, except to keep it constantly in condition for training operations. There were nearly 200 horses stabled at the course during the summer mouths that received their racing preparation over the track for the fall cam paign. At present the track is slow, but if no more rain falls before Jhe opening it will be lightning fast for the running of the Latonia Inaugural Handicap, aud it is not improbable that the track record for the mile and a sixteenth will be lowered in that race, as many good horses are engaged. Starbottle, Meridian, Swannanoa, Mary Davis, Adams Exprcsss. Cherryola, Leamence, High Private, Governor Gray and Pinkola are looked upon as sure starters. If taa above go to the post, the race will have a gross value of ,570, of which the winners net portio.n will be ,005. It is likely, if favorable racing con ditions prevail, that owners of others besides the above-named will try for the rich plum and every additional starter above ten will swell the winners share by 0. Helmet, Princess Callaway, Granite and Milton B. are looked uion as likely additional material. There already have been some arrivals from Louisville, but the real influx will not set in until Satur day. Specials are then scheduleed to continue until Tuesday, when it is thought that the transfer of more than COO horses from the Falls City will have been accomplished. Some of the big stables will split their stableG, sending part on Saturday and the remainder ou Monday. Tills is done mainly with a view to engaging some of the horses ou the closing day of the Churchill Downs meeting. Among those who intend to ship part of their string here Saturday and engage some of the others that day at Louisville are R. F. Carman, II. C. Hallenbeck, F. R. Hitchcock. J. R. Wainwright, L. P. Doerhoefer, George-M.-Odom .iiud James SKverilian. - All the big stables, with the exception of W. G. Yankee, will ship to Latonia. The Yanke consign rneut will go to Mexico City some time next weoU and will be accompanied by about fifty horses variously owned. After the meeting at Mexico City, all the horses that will engage in the racing there will be shipped to Juarez for the 100-days meeting the coming winter. Latonia will draw most of the riders now doing saddle service at Churchill Downs, while the Maryland courses will contribute extensively later. There will also be additions to the ranks of the owners from Pimlico and Laurel. Pimlico comes to a close on Saturday, October 21, affording owners at that point opportunity to engage in the Latonia racing for three weeks. The Laurel contingent will be able to take part in only ten days racing at Latonia it they are so minded as to ship here after the close of Maryland racing. The Latonia Endurance Stakes, which well features the stake offerings of the meeting and is carded for the closing day, promises to exceed in bril Iiancy the four-mile Endurance Stakes decided at Louisville and won by Messenger Boy. The distance two miles makes it more popular with horsemen than the longer event, as evidenced by the thirtj.-seven nominations made to it, which is almost double the number made for the Kentucky Endurance Stakes. Tho Latonia fixture, in addition, is a handicap and the handicappers adjustment of weights Is exacted to afford all the starters equal opportunity. Such cracks as Countless, Meridian, Starbottle, Cherrvola, Governor Gray, Pinkola. Messcuger Boy, High Private, Swannanoa, Star Charter and Herkimer are nominated in it. Distance racers like Any Port, Mockler, Stone Street,. Volthorpe, Naughty Lad and Azo are also named, and while considered in a lower grade than the first named cracks, tho weight concessions may make them important factors in the result. Like the Louisville long distance event, the Latonia Endurance Stakes will be well worth striving Tor, as the winners share of the stakes will total close to ,000.
