I . TWO SKILFUL TRAINERS FOR LATONIA. Cincinnati. O.. October 12. .lames S. Evernian, who has had marked success as a trainer this year with Governor Gray. County Tax, Mack B. Eubanks. T. M. Green and Stone Street, made a Hying visit to Latonia from Churchill Downs Sunday to see that his stable was properly prepared for the reception of his string, which will be shipped here from Louisvilte this week. But a few seasons back Mr. Everman had only o. horse in his stable, a colt then owned by the Ci ciunati turfman, T. M. Green. Today. Mr. Kwrn Jl has the horses of four different racing firms aflTT could easily get many more to train if he cared to take them. At sight he suggests the old-time horseman, but a close scrutiny of his stable will reveal that no trainer is more up-to-date. While he Is about every morning by daylight, he never works his horses under cover, waiting until about eight oclock in the morning when the sun is well advanced in the sky before he brings his charges on the track. Every horse he sends to the post Is trained to the hour and that accounts for his remarkable faculty of winning the first time out. He began at Churchill Downs this fall with Mack B. Eubanks, T. M. Green and Stone Street, each of which finished first in their in itial starts. One of the secrets of Mr. Evermans success is his close attention to business. Except when the races are on and he is at home for the night, he-is never away from his stable. In fact, ho is noted as one of the hardest workers that ever trained ii stable of horses. He trains his horses steadily and rarely lets them run a fast trial. Once their speed becomes known to him he is satisfied to let them go along slowly and thus gradually jiet them ready. lli then lets them do their fast work in actual racing, lie is especially skilful with a crippled horse, which is plainly illustrated in his experience with the 190S Kentucky Derby winner. Stone Street. That horse, a cripple almost from birth, is better today at six years old than ever before in his career. Mr. Everman is a man of family and when his work at the stable is finished for the -day, his home receives all his attention. He is the type of man who would succeed in almost any business. Another trainer who will be at Latonia with his string is the veteran Peter Wimmer. He has been in the limelight recently because of the sensational unbeaten colt Sonada being in his string. Mr. Wimmer has been connected with horses for more than thirty-live years. In 1S70 lie brought to Kentucky the remarkable two-year-old filly. Belle of the Meade. She defeated the great colts just as she did the lillies and retired a two-year-old with a great reputation. Unfortunately, she died the following winter, but to this day there are turfmen around the tracks who believe that of all the great mares that liavj! trod the turf as two-year-olds, none was superior to Belle of the Meade. Among the great horses that Mr. Wimmer lias trained, from Belle of the Meades time down to Sonada, may be mentioned Ben Holladay, Higi Order. Broomstick, Senorita aud the remarkable Kinley Mack with which, in one season, he won both the Brooklyn and the Suburban Handicaps.
