SWYNF0RD BREAKS DOWN IN TRAINING. One of the most brilliant racers of the time went hopelesslv wrong at Newmarket. England. September 20, when Lord Derbys great horse, Swynford, unexpectedly broke down while taking an exercise gallop. So bad was his case that at last advices there was doubt as to whether his life could be saved, but he was suspended in slings in the hope that he might be preserved for future service in the stud. Of this unfortunate occurrence Loudon Sportsman of September 30, said: "We are as sorry to record, as all sportsmen will regret to learn, that Lord Derbys good horse, Swynford, met with a serious accident at Newmarket -estcrday morning. He was having a steady gallop with his stable companion, St. Girons, on the July Course, when he broke down in the near fore fetlock. The son of John oGaunt and Canterbury Pilgrim was immediately placed under the charge of Mr. Livock, the veterinary surgeon, who found that the Stanley House crack had broken a bone in a foreleg, and will not be able to run again, though every effort will bo made, to save him for the stud. Ho is at present being cared for at Mr. Livoeks establishment. "It is understood that Swynford was in special training for the valuable Prix du Couseil Municipal, to be run at Paris on the Sth of next month, and in view of the excellent form shown by Lord Derbys eolt there appeared every prospect of his adding that event usually worth over 4.000 sovereigns to the nianv good races down to his account. "Swynford. a brown colt, by John oGaunt. out of Canterbury Pilgrim, bred by his owner, only ran once as a two"-vear-old, then finishing unplaced to The Jade in he Exeter Stakes, Newmarket First July. As a three-year-old the eolt was not in the first nine to Leutberg in the Derby; ran third to Lemberg in the St. James Palace Stakes, Ascot; woii the Hardwicko Stakes, beating Marajax, Sanctuary, and others; won the Liverpool Cup. defeating Last Call, Temeralre and others, and credited Lord Derby with the Doneaster St. Lcger, leing followed home by P.ronzino and Lemberg. He subsequently walked over for the Liverpool St. Loger. This year Swynford appropriated the Chipicuham Plate. Newmarket First Spring; was beaten by Lemlierg for the Coronation Cup at Epsom; won the Hardwicko Stakes, Ascot, for the second time, finishing In front of The Story ami Mustapha: won the Princess of Wales Stakes, Newmarket First July, beating l.eiubere. King William mid others, and next won tlie Eclipse Stakes at Sandown, Lcthberg and Iietri following hiin home. Altogether; Swynford won eight races and earned in stakes 25.50S sovereigns."
