WELL-BACKED WINNERS AT LAUREL. Lieut. Lyman Pilots Kyrat to Victory in Race for Officers of Army and Navy." Laurel. Md., October 18. Race-goers were treated to a surprise when they reached the Laurel track this afternoon, for all figured that the going would be sloppy as a result of heavy rain last night. Although the track was heavy enough to give tho mud runners the preference, it had dried out remarkably well and it probably will be in good condition for tomorrows racing. While there were many absentees during the day, large and well-matched fields went to the post in each race and two good things were put over in Horicon, which, backed from S to 1 to 7 to 2. won the second race in a drive by half a length from May Amelia, while Kyrat, winner of the third, was backed from 10 to 1 to 5 to 1. Kyrats victory came in the running; of the race for officers of the army and navy and there wru six starters that went the distance of two miles. Kyrat, ridden by Lieut. Lyman, was in a good position throughout, went t6 the front in the stretch and drew out with ease to win by four lengths from O. K. In addition to the purse that was offered for the race, a silver loving cup was presented to Lieut. Lyman by the association. This being Wednesday, the usual stake attraction was on. Hie event this afternoon was the Canvas Back Selling Stakes, a dash of three-quarters of a mile. Montcalm, a 12 to 1 chance, was the easiest kind of a winner. After running second to the far turn, he shot to the front and opened a gap which tlie other could not close. Hey ran a wonderful race to win the opening purse, as he was knocked sideways at the start by Lesbos, but was sent on and was able to got to the front in the stretch. Lesbos wheeled at the start and in addition to unseating his rider interfered with Stairs, .Monsieur X and Senator Sparks so that they had no chance to recover. Husky Lad, which won the closing race yesterday, was bid up and purchased by Sam Louis, but his former owner. F. H. Milden. induced Mr. Louis to return the horsi, which he did without advaiic Joakey Byrne, who wan thrown from Capital! Bravo in the first race on Friday last, will return to the saddle tomorrow. Dave Woodford, former -trainer of the .Beverwyck Stable horses, was among those who witnessed the racing today. Col. Win. Breckenridgo. who has just returned from Cuba, also witnessed the racing. There were three absentees in the drawing for position in the ring today, only twenty-four books being in line. Tomorrow will be known as Governors Day at tlie track, because of the fact that Governor Crothers has announced that he will visit the course. Ben. Jackson foreman for Preston Burch. has iust returned from France, and he states that Mr. Burch will return to this country about December 1. He says that Mr. Burch. who has met with considerable success la France and Italy, intends to return there next year. There will be another novelty race on -Saturday If the track is in good condition, while Monday has been set aside as Ladies Day.
