HAMPTON COURT WINS PIMLICO STAKES. Jockey Shilling Pilots Hildreth Racer to Victory in Long Distance Contest. Baltimore. Md., Octolier IS. With the Pimlico Selling Stakes at one mile and three-quarters, together with a race that attracted the best of the high-class sprinters in training, as the features of todays card, the attendance at the Pimlico course was larger than on any previous-da y of the meeting, notwithstanding it was a gray day with dark clouds chasing one another all afternoon. The rain of last night had left the track muddy and soft, and though it had a good bottom only the good mud runners could successfully race in the going. The stake event saw the defeat of the well backed favorite. Superstition, which was the victor in this same race last year. Superstition, it was known, had no great liking for the going, but his recent form had been so good that it was thought he would win anyhow. Hampton Court, the Hildreth entry, receded in the betting. When it came to racing Hamilton Court, with Shilling up. merely cantered all the way. to win with great ease, while Bounder had no trouble in defeating Superstition, which m-parently ran far below bis form. The favorite had all he could do to beat Supervisor, his half brother, for third money. The colors of Thomas Fortune Ryan, who races under the name of the Oak Ridge Farm, were seen in front at Pimlico for the first time when Belle Nelson won the oening scramble for two-year-olds. Tlie Futurity winner. Novelty, made his first appearance at the Baltimore course in the second race, having as opponents Naushou, Lahore and Royal Meteor. Novelty was a topheavy choice, but Shilling had to hustle him sharply in the final drive to get home in advance of Lahore. In the Owners Handicap Steeplechase, Gun Cotton had no trouble in beating her opposition. H. T. Wilson scored his daily victory with Beau-coup, making his thirteenth of the meeting. Be.tu-ccup was at prohibitive odds and won without trouble. The best finish of the afternoon came in the last nice, a mile and forty yards affair, in which Maromara nosed out Harvey F. in tlie last stride. Harvey F. was taken the roundabout route and should have been returned the winner. William Garth has re-purchased the filly, Maro-mara, from Robert W; Walden. Mr. Garth sold Maromara to Mr. Walden last fall, but the latter lias not been successful with her. She signalized her return to the Garth barn by- winning today. J. W. May. with tlie horses of Frederick Johnson and John G. Greener, including Countless and Amis Turney. with his stable, left this afternoon -for Latonia, where they will race the meeting out. .Matt Allen took the horses he is training to Benning. - William Oliver, who trains for Dr. J. S. Tyrec, will leave tomorrow or next day for Benning, where he will, winter. Next month he will get a batch of yearlings from Kentucky. Jockey MeTaggart left tonight for Cincinnati and will ride during the Latonia meeting. The Chelsea Stable, with Speculator and The Rascal, were arrivals from Philadelphia this afternoon.
