ENGLANDS MOST EXCLUSIVE SUMMER RACE MEETING MEETINGLeading Leading Features of Goodwood Racing American Bred Colt Defeats Craganour at Equal Weights Frank Wootton Sus ¬ pended for a Month Statistics of English Racing London Kug August 0 The lust dny or racing at 1 hirst Iark Saturday July 27 was marked by ii occurrence having an important bearing on the St Legor and other races to come for threeyear olds This was the reappearance in racing of last winter and springs Epsom Derby antepost favorite Lomond fully restored to good health and evidently in good racing form The race was the Duchess of York Plate at a mile and a quarter and of the value of 4 Ml to the winner lie was only opposed liy Jaeger and as the latter had to carry pounds to liis 1Jii Lomond was naturally a warm favorite going to the post at it to 4 on The result was in accordance with the betting market Lomond leading all the way and winning by six lengths in 20Hf For some time previous to this performance Tracery had been deemed by good judges a quite probable winner of the St Legor but a new element was here somewhat unexpectedly injected into the situa tion and when intepost wagering over the big Don caster race begins in earnest Lomond is as likely to figure as the public favorite as Tracery A great many people burnt their lingers over him in conue tion with the Derby without having a run for their money and will quite naturally hope to recoup their losses through a St Ieger triumph As the race is more than a month distant its contestants cannot now be definitely located but at any rate Lomond Tracery Tagalie Sweeper II Hector Catmint Javelin Maiden Erlegh and Jaeger are of those deemed almost certain to go to the post postThe The Goodwood meeting which came to a close yesterday was as is usually the case more ini M rtiut socially than in a racing way although the sport was interesting enough here and there Rainy weather interfered somewhat but the fart that King Ceorge was in steady attendance coun ¬ teracted and on the whole the meeting was dis ¬ tinctly successful Two long established events of Goodwood racing which formerly provoked enor ¬ mous betting the Goodwood Plate and Goodwood Cnp have Inclined steniJUjrfiB unpectauce JuiLUip course of the last twenty years nnd their decision this year excited no more liian passing interest The Plate is at two miles and threeeighths and had nine starters with Irish Marine an easy winner from Winthorpo and Warlingham The Cup is run over a course of about two miles and five eighths and had but three starters of which the lilly Tootles was made the favorite at 10 to S while 2 to 1 each was laid against King William and Tnllihardine The lastnamed won by a half lengih from King William with the favorite a length away so the finish was not without a tinge of excitement The one race of the meeting invested witli the greatest public interest was the Stewards Cup at threequarters run on the first day of the meet ing Of late years this event has become a great antei ost letting race and a few days before its decision the Whitney filly Bashti was the favorite in consequence of heavy kicking but at post time Gramniont was favorite at 4 to 1 with Golden Hod second choice at to L while Aiglon Bashti and Prcster Jack stood at 10 to 1 each Twentyone started and besides Bashti were the other American horses Kitnnymede and Cata ¬ ract the latter of which was practically left at the post Iashti led for something over half the way and disappeared and at the end Golden Uoii with Maiier up was one of the easiest of winners of I he event on record with Poor oy second and Uncle Pit third Golden Hod won this race in 110 and as a coincidence Poor Hoy was second on that ofcasiou also Golden Hod is a sou of the Ameri ¬ can horse Americus which Richard Croker brought over to Ireland from the ITnited States and like his sire is of tremendous speed over short courses lie gave fresh proof of this later on in the week when at equal weights 10i pounds each he defeated J It Joels noted sprinter Spanish Prince in the valuable King George Stakes at six furlongs furlongsHowever However ii may be in other departments Good ¬ woods twoyearold racing is always interesting and important the recent meeting upholding this tradi ¬ tion With weights in his favor Ciiganour de ¬ feated Shogun in the New Stakes at Ascot and was held to rank witli the latter as one of the two best colts of the year Hut on the last day of tno meeting the Americanbred colt Hock Flint de ¬ feated Craganour at equal weights in the Mole comb Stakes at six furlongs Kach colt carried 1 pounds and Hock Flint won by a head in a grandly contested finish the obvious deduction being that Mr Iteddingtons Hod Sand colt is to be con ¬ sidered in the first flight of the years twoyearolds It is a matter of record that Mr Boddington had won the same race witli Stratliorn thirty years pre ¬ viously Other important twoyearold races of HIP meeting were the Hichmond Slakes won by Sero inoiKl Ham Stakes won by William of Orange Lavant Stakes won by Shogun Prince of Wales Stakes won by Day Comet and the Rons Memorial Stakes which fell to Querns Man all being events of long establishment and many traditions traditionsThe The real sensation of the Goodwood meeting how ¬ ever was in the posting of the following notice The stewards of the Jockey Club having re ¬ ceived a complaint from the owner Ilamerton that F Wootton on Sunspot intentionally interfered witli his horse on two occasions during the race for lie Liverpool Summer Cup inquired into the matter Having questioned all the jockeys who rode in the race they decided there was not sulliciont evidence for them to determine what jockey or jockeys were responsible for the rough riding which undoubtedly took place Having received a further report as to Woottons riding in the Atlantic Stakes they called him before them and having heard evidence in the presence of Lord Sefton one of the acting stewards of the Liverpool meeting to whom the two reports had been previously submitted sus ¬ pended Wootton from August 1 to August t in ¬ clusive for reckless riding about which he had repeated 1 v been admonished Signed VilliersF Villiers F W Lamhton Eustace Loder LoderThis This severe discipline came as a stunning surprise to the great following of the crack jockey of the time and is a great misfortune to him One prob ¬ able effect is that Danny Maher will presently pass him in the winning mounts competition and having done so may hold his advantage to the end of the theTracerys Tracerys performance in the Susse not exactly a runaway affair from Sweeper II as once at Hie distance it appeared as though the ver diet hung in the balance for just a stride or two Maiier may of course have had a trifle in hand for he had his elbows out close home and although according to Judgo Hobiusou he only won by a half length it was evident that the further Tracery had to go the further would lie have won If he does not train on he will be an exception to the usual produce by Hock Sand which have both stamina and pluck on their side sideT T B Joels colt by Suiidiidge out of Dons and therefore own brother to Suusfar and White Star made his debut in flic Prince of Wales Stakes and for a backward colt he can bo said to have ac ¬ quitted himself creditably If a shade bigger than While Star he has not Hie hitters sturdy setting or big muscular quarters though on a tritle bigger scale He can be said to be full of racing pro fn st ¬ and one destined to train on a slight present advantage niong the owners lower down in the list E Hill ton is doing extremely well his good fortune in imssossing three crack twoyearolds compensating measurably for such loss as he experienced when Lomond went wrong early in the racing season II P Whitney is also prospering but in a fashion is unfortunate in that Whisk Broom is nearly debarred from racing by the fact that the official handicap pers think so highly of his prowess that top weight is bis iioriion in all handicaps up to a mile The present standing of owners whose horses have won SIL500 or more is isWinning his compulsory standing down must considerably prejudice the bright prospect he previously held of being well at the head of the winning list at the close of the season The wider opportunity alTorded
