H. S. GIDDINGS STRING FOR THIS YEAR. kvillc Ont.. .pril S. -The thoroughbreds of t. :rry Giddings. which stabl- has been so prominent •: C n-dian tracks in recent years, will he shipped : Woodbine Iark. Toronto, about April 20. where fhey will receive their spring preparation, as usual. The consignment will be made up of only seven lead, the smallest number for several seasons. They have wintered in grand shape and it is expected that the stable will again be formidable in the events for C inadian-breds. The older division of the string is made up of: Peohivo. b. g. 5. by Bassetlaw — My Honey. Harry Bassett II., b. g. 4, by Bassetlaw — My Money. Armine. ch. f. 3. by Bassetlaw — My Honey. Armine is the dependence of the stable for the Kings Plato. Although it is generally believed that a filly has little chance over the Plate journey of one and a quarter miles so early in the season, Armine may prove to be an exception. She is a fine-looking filly, in fact the largest at her age ever turned out at Cedar Grove Farm, the home of many a good one. The record of never having finished worse than second in twelve starts last season as a two-year-old speaks volumes for the daughter of Passetlaw — My Honey. She also earned brackets three times and in all of her races she displayed speed and •ourage over all kinds of tracks, under heavy bur-d ns and at a!! distances th • Canadian-bred youngsters were asked to go. Armine met and defeated every province-bred two-year-old out last year that is considered to be a factor in the Plate race this spring. She is powerfully built, sound as a dollar and will be pointed for the coveted trophy. Peehive as a sire has ben a rank disappointment. He was used for breeding purposes at Cedar Grove Farm last spring, but failed to get a foal. After running twice unplaced later in the season, he was gelded last fall. A kick received while at the post during the autumn meeting at Woodbine in 1914 is held to blame for the inferior showing made by Beehive last year. He was invincible as a two-year-old and was easily best of the Canadian-breds in 1911. during which year he won many stakes, including the Kings Plate. Breeders Stakes. Hendrie Handicap. Stanley Produce Stakes and the Dominion Handicap, netting his owner over 0,000. Although taken along carefully by trainer Harry Giddings, Jr.. last year. Beehive never recovered from the injury. He showed none of his old-time speed, either in public or private. He is looking much better this spring and may "come back." Harry Bassett II. was probably the best-looking yearling ever bred by Mr. Giddings. and an offer of ,000 was refused for him at that age. After his first race as a two-year-old. however, he showed little class in comparison with others of similar breeding. He retired a maahn at the end of the 1914 season. Last year in thirteen starts Harry f.assett II. won two races, was second once and third twice. He may pay his way again this year, but it must be in cheap company unless he displays startling improvement. This brother to Beehive is also looking good. It has become customary of late for Mr. Giddings to turn out some of the best-looking two-year-olds bred in Canada each year. His string of juveniles is usually small, but select, and what is lacking in numbers is made up in quality. This spring is no exception. The quartet of youngsters are up to the usual high standard in appearance and showed up well in their trials last fall. They are as follows: Praline, br. f. 2. by Bassetlaw— My Maryland. Oriana. br. f. 2. by Bassetlaw — Lady Betz. Bavarde, b. f, 2, by Bassetlaw — Cuba Free. apt. Bee. br. g, 2, by St. Bass — Burdette. The stable will not be so well fortified in the juvenile division for net year, as only two yearlings are now at the Oakville Farm. One is a chestnut gelding by Bassetlaw out of the good producing mare My Honey and therefore a brother to Armine, Beehive and others. The other is a brown gelding by Bassetlaw — Jai Ali. Burdette has been added to the broodmares at the Giddings farm and she has a foal by Martimas. The five mares this spring are being mated with Joseph Doauca well-bred Plaudit horse, Plaudmore.
