BIG THRONG AT HAWTHORNE 1 DODGE STUMBLES AND IS BEATEN IN THE CHICAGO MERCHANTS HANDICAP. li Bedwcll Takes the Race with Sir Edgar Frar.k- lin an Easy Winner Jockey Schainclioni Sus- pended After Skilcs Knob Is Beaten. j v A typical Saturday attendance, reminiscent of J former years when racing in tliesc parts was at its height, was present at Hawthorne yesterday to " witness a good card of six races, featured liy the " Chicago Merchants Handicap. Ideal conditions iwe- vailed and the immense throng enjoyed the oeca- -sion greatly. Sheriff Traegor and his deputies were again on the alert for possible betting viola- r tors. Several persons, who were seen to exchange money, were promptly taken into custody. t An outstanding incident of the afternoon was the suspension of jockey Sehainohorn, following his ! seemingly listless effort on Skilcs Knob, an out- standing favorite which failed to get a place in the second race. Steward FitzGerald did not stop at issuing the suspension, but also ordered the cancellation of all the riders engagements for the i afternoon and began probing further into the race. J Skilcs Knob, on past performances, appeared to he best in the race and there was a good hit of sur- I prise when he failed to go into a long lead, as is I his custom. He finished far hack and never seri- ously threatened at any stage of the race. He 1 was retarded somewhat at the barrier when he I failed to clear the ribbon, but this could hardly I he considered as enough to have a bearing on the I result. Whether the riders fault or not, lie fact remains dial the horse ran far below his lx-st form. He is again entered for Monday and his showing on that occasion under another rider will 1 be watched with interest. The withdrawal of Loo Skolny and Skilcs Knob ! from the Chicago Merchants Handicap, left six to contest for the ,:!2.ri net that went to the win- 1 nor with Weber am! Wards double Derby win-Dodge, ruling a big favorite and the recipient of 1 confident support. His backers were sadly disappointed, considering that the colt thoroughly showed his superiority over the others. His defeat was due solely to a mishap at he start 1 when he stumbled badly. The incident caused him to grab his quarter and by he time he fully recovered, he was so far back as to make it appear that he was a forlorn hope. The Itedwell and OMcara entry, consisting of Sir Edgar and Pesky, were away forward!- and alternated in the lead with Blackie Daw and Faux-Col following, until on the approach to the stretch turn, where Sir Kdgar under urging forged clear, but in the last furlong Pesky came again, and the pair fought it out in a game fashion to the end with Sir Kdgar winning by a half-length. Dodge after being last for the first quarter, began moving up in resolute fashion, and at the end was overhauling the leaders rapidly and running fastest. With equal racing luck Dodge would have won by himself. Weber and Ward, owners of Dodge, found some consolation for that colts defeat in the splendid victory achieved by Franklin in the Presidents flip race at one mile, which preceded the stake fen lire. Like his stablcmate, Franklin was an outstanding choice, and during the early progress of the race seemed to be going with a choppy stride and laboring. Kinney had been rushed into what seemed a decisive lead with Iluffaker his closest attendant and AVilhito, the other starter, trailing. This order of the running was maintained for nearly three-quarters, until Franklin found himself. Once settled fully in his stride. Kranklin gave a surprising display of speed and passed tin; others in a flash, to ultimately win as his rider pleased, iluffaker held on in fairly good style to oustay Wilhite, but Kinney quit badly in the stretch. The sport began with :t dash of three-quarters, which engaged an ordinary band, with anionic regarded best and Uosemary next, in esteem. The race was always between the pair, Rosemary leading for most of the race and Cardume the runner-up. Ralph S.. after working his way clear, came fast and overhauled the others to get third money. Hawthorns withdrawal made Skilcs Knob an overwhelming choice, nut Wanda Iitzer, after running under restraint to the stretch, overhauled Corkoy W. ami won easily, Souvenir outstaying Billy Joe for second place. The latter pair botii showed improvement over former performances. A rattling finish developed in the fifth race, when the first six at the end were heads and necks ; apart, with Rio Brazos winner over Jerry and Ltizzi. Rio P.rnzos showed vastly better form than he did in his hist race, but his victory at that was a lucky one, for Jerry ran as if he was much the best and during the early running his case appeared hopeless. He came, with a sensational rush 1 in he last quarter. The final dash brought to the post fifteen and 1 hey were a jumbled up band when going to the first turn. Charles Francis was one of the lucky ones to escape interference and he came away to win easily " from Type, with Mex following. Jockey Roscoe Goose, who headed the list of r winning riders at the Kentucky track this year, ! and is regarded by many as the best rider now in the country, was among the visitors at the track, lie came in company of L. 11. Adair, who is interested ; considerably in some of the racers running in the name of AV. II. Baker. Jockev A. Claver came from Canada to do the , riding for II. :. Itedwell. His saddle work will be confined strictly to starters from that stable, . as starter Milton suspended him for all but his contract employer for disobedience at the post in the fourth race. "Dick" "Williams staled hat he "Williams Itrolhers horses would be kept at Hawthorne for l" some time and shipped back to Lexington previously to the resumption of Kentucky racing September 0. Hawthorns withdrawal was a result of a slight 1 attack of colic that the horse suffered during the night. There were several arrivals during the day from i "Windsor and more are expected today and Monday. Among those who came from the Canadian track v was M. Lowenstein. who brought Hoenir, ltirka i and Kequiram. J. W. Fuller has returned. His s horses have been racing at Hawthorne. Italfron showed decided symptoms of lameness s after his start in the last race. The westerner, A. Zieglcr, joined the riding ; colony and had the mount on Del Friar. Sam Davis, who is extensively interested in the e Essex Park track, departed for Hot Springs, Ark., after making tentative plans for the meeting there e next fall. According to present arrangements there e will he no purse of less than 00 and three stakes s will be announced with ,"00 added. The staff T of officials who will scene, will be the best that t can be obtained, according to Mr. Davis. Dodge suffered a slight injury as a result of his s stumbling at the start. "I dont think the injury r at all serious," said Mr. Ward, his trainer, "hut t I would rather the accident had not happened." Owner Itedwell did not regard Sir Kdgar as having g much chance of taking Dodges measure, but advised I- a number of his friends to have a wager r down on Volant. The latter showed nothing to o warrant the confidence.
