AN AMERICAN OWNERS FINE VICTORY. Tim field for the Prince of Wales Stakes once a ten thousand pound race, but now worth only about a. fiftli of that amount was a curiously mixed one. Seven runners wen; notified to lie-gin with, but the rider of Tiberius, which was not colored on the card, did not arrive in time. In the matter of class Nassovian. third for both Two Thousand Guineas and New Derby, stood out by himself yet, owing to his never having won a race he had no penalty of any sort to carry. His opponents consisted of the four-year-olds. Follow lp and Elkingtou. and three of his own age in Kings Prize, Roeleric and Blnekndder all of which appeared to be outclassed.- Elkingtou was believed to have the best chance of anything to make a race of it with the favorite, but the Clarehaven colt was beaten on his merits for second place by Bhickaddor. The latter three-year-old, by the way, is a stable companion of Kwang-Su. whose absence from the field practically destroyed all interest in the contest. As Mr. Fairies colt had already twice lieu ten Nassovian narrowly, it is true in their classic outings, lie would probably have started favorite. Whether he would have confirmed his earlier form against his rival can only be a matter for conjecture, but Xnssovians trainer regretted as much as anybody that his strong belief in the half-brother to Craganour could not be put further to the test. No more thoroughly trained horse has ever gone out to do battle, and his appearance paid the greatest tribute to the skill and attention bestowed upon him by the veteran. Butters. Mr. Sanford, Nassovians owner, is a we-althy American, who won the Kentucky Derby not long ago, and as the result of yesterdays race would be immediately cabled to him, lit- will now know for certain that his colt is a really good one. Nassovian was ridden yesterday by his regular jockey. Spear, who was thus afforded some compensation for the disappointment lie suffered in being deprived of the mount in the New Derby. When Nassovian failed in the New Derby. J. Butters came in for much sympathy, for everyone would like to see the veteran with a classic winner under his charge. However, the turn of tin: Kremlin House trainer came yesterday, when the half-brother to the ill-fated Craganour credited Mr. John Sanford, with tin Princess of Wales Stakes. Nassovian. like many a good horse before him. will not do more than is required of him, anil will race with anything. Tliis may account for his jockey having to wake him up at the Plantation Corner just as Elkingtou was threatening him. Once touched Nassovian came away, and even when he was left in front he must have thought he had done all that was required of him, and began to "back pedal" again. By that, time the winning post was reached and Spear was content. London Sporting Life of July li.
