Tom McTaggart First in the Valuable East View Stakes Many Thoroughbreds from Abroad. New York. July 22. Tom McTaggart showed in the East View Stakes at Empire City today that he is a colt of good class. He beat Ticket, among others, in a drive after running around his opponents and after getting away slowly. Owing to the muddy track Harry Kelly was scratched while ltallad. Kcprobate and Wood Trap were added. It was one of those whip-slashing races, with plenty of jostling and bearing out on the home turn, in which practically every horse suffered through the running out of Friendless and the forcing out of Ticket with him. These incidents caused those in the rear division to ease up somewhat as Friendless and Ticket were zig-zagging and the jockeys behind did not know whether to take an inside or outside course. Kcprobate showed the most early speed with Ticket at his heels, while Friendless ran up on the inside. In the meantime Taplin took Tom McTaggart around the two and fortunately escaped interference. Had it not been for being forced out. it is just, possible Ticket would have won as he was closing up fast at the finish on the tired Tom McTaggart. The latter was under he whip for he last eighth, though several lengths in advance of the struggling followers. Owing to a car strike, patrons of the sport were inconvenienced somewhat, but there were nearly 10.000 on baud to watch the racing. As was expected, there were plenty of scratches from the Youkers Handicap, Roamer and Ed Crump being the only two of those originally carded to start, while Spur and Daddys Choice were added. Koamer proved best, leading from start to finish, hut he was a tired horse at the end. although, perhaps, not any more so than the others. For a lime it seemed Spur might get Koamer in the last eighth, but Mr. Millers gelding responded to P.ut-wells whip in the gamest fashion. The popularity of Ko: r was demonstrated while he was winning and. after the race, he crowd yelled for fully two minutes after he returned to the stand. The shouting broke out again as the horse was being led away to his stable. Ed Crump showed well for a mile", then retired, as did Daddys Choice. Mr. Schorr was afraid the going was against Kd Crump and his prediction proved correct,, as he tired perceptibly at seven-eighths. The Marrono stable has purchased Woodward from J. W. lledrick. The latter chiim"d him a few days ago for ,710 from the Itrighton Stable. The Willis Sharpe Kilmer stable, in charge of trainer Frank M. Taylor, goes to Saratog i tonight and will be followed by several other stables within a few days. Todav marked the tenth anniversary of the closing of the Salem, X. II., track on July 22, 1005. The first winner. Hob Ilensley, was bid up by J. W. lledrick from ,000 to ,000, but wis bought in. His victory was accomplished with the utmost ease, he winning perhaps by as great a margin as any horse in the east this year. Trainer George M. Odom was offered 5,000 for Tom McTaggart after his victory in the E st View Stakes today, but as the owner of the Itrighton Stable was not at he track, the offer was not accepted. Tom McTaggart was raised by II. D. Chenault. Itaker P.ros. offered ,200 for the colt as a yearling and were asked ,500. He was later sold to the Itrighton Stable at a much lower figure. Walter H. Pearce will depart for a trip on the great lakes tomorrow and will return to Saratoga for he racing here. Word was received at he rack by W. II. Itaker, before he departed for Ituffalo. that his good colt Hot Toddy, had died from lockjaw at Latonin. Between seventy and eighty head of thoroughbreds arrived in New York today on the Mongolia. They are the property of several owners, among them being twenty for Clarence II. Mackay. three marcs for Corrigan and McKinney, four yearlings for John Sauford and between thirty and forty head the property of Dalbert Keiff. which were selected from the choicest French product. The Mackay yearlings will be sold at Saratoga by In; Powers Hunter company and it is anticipated that the Keiff band will be disposed of in the same 1 manner. Following is a list of the Mackay yearlings: Itan-dana. I, f.
