11AIN AT CIIU11CIIILL DOWNS c i CHANGED TRACK CONDITIONS HELPS MUD RUNNERS AND BEINGS SURPRISES. v i 1 Douglas Park Club Brings Suit Challenging Ken- n I tucky State Racing Commissioners Right t to Fix the Amount of Purses. i " Lousvillo, Ky., September 2S. A terrific down- : jmur of r.-iiii this morning changed local trad: win- 1 ditinns and gave the mud runners an opportunity to race to their liost. As a result of 11i adverse weather conditions there was a noticeable falling : off in patronage, Imt a surprisingly Rood crowd t at ten, led at that. The changed going brought with it many surprises, favorites being bowled 1 over steadily. The. sport was interesting and the i finishes close. i The. worst disappointment of the afternoon de-voloped in tin- fifth race, a handicap for two-year- I olds at five and a half furlongs, for which Kit-tinish was a pronounced choice. i The winner turned up in Sol Gilsey after a rous- ing drive to dispose of Sister Kinhlem and Walter 11. Iearce, the favorite running poorly in the 1 going. i Another rattling finish developed in the fourth race when Converse succeeded, after a hard effort, in beating Milestone by a head in the last ten yards. I Milestone was a like distance in front of Rob 1 lens-ley. The latter might have been the winner, but . Median took him out of contention at the start and : lost ground by bringing him wide into the stretch. : Ardents victory over Sosius, the latter a strong choice, gave the public a big setback. Anient ran freely in the going and led all the way. After the finish .1. M. Henry. Jr., advanced her hB100 over : her entered price of 00, but she was retained with an advance bid of . Hanovers riding of "Waterproof was a vast improvement over that which Connelly gave the horse in liis last start and. coupled with the horse 1-eing favored by the muddy going, it enabled him to win as his rider pleased, with Injury leading the well-supported Polly II. for second place. Todays visitors included Senator Ollie James and Congressman Arthur 15. Rouse. The Douglas Park Jockey Club filed suit this morning in the Circuit Court to test the ri-?ht of tin; Kentucky State Kacing Commission to lix a minimum value of .00 for purses to be offered at the race meetings held by the club. The first paragraph of the petition sets forth that it is a friendly suit. The defendants are the Kentucky State Kacing Commission composed of II. II. Tal-bolt. .1. X. Camden, Allie V. Young, Charles F. Grainger and AV. It. Haldcmnn. The rule which was adopted September 1 with Messrs. Haldeman and Grainger voting against it provides that no purse of less than 00 shall be offered by a racing association within ten miles of a city of "00,000 and that no purse of less than 1916.sh00 shall lie given by any racing association. It set f artli that while the Lexington track may offer purses of 1916.sh00, Louisville and Latonia cannot olter less than 800. It is denied that the Commission has the authority to lix the amounts of the purses. It is to the interests of the association and the horsemen to offer some purses of less than .00 and others, more, it is churned. Horsemen here, who had in view racing in New Orleans next, winter, are much concerned over the present imbroglio in the Crescent City and are anxious for a satisfactory adjustment between the warring factions, so as to enable them to make definite plans for their winter campaign. Kuchclkaiiip was bought at private sale before the first race by Walt or II. Pearee and .T. M. llenrv, Jr.. and after his victory he was advanced from an entered price of .$."00 to 00 by "W. V. Walsh, but was retained with an advance of . T. 1. Hayes will offer the good racer Jack ODowd for sale next Saturday during the yearling sale to lie held in the Churchill Downs paddock. Tin; horse is owned by P. J. Millott, who is desirous of disposing of him. The Francis J. Pons youngsters to be sold Saturday include five colts and six fillies, sired by Tony Roucro and Judge "Wright. The Tony l!o-iiero baud, of which there an? nine, appear a likely aggregation and shipped here from the farm in good style. Mr. Pons arrived yesterday with the colts.
