SHORT GRASS IN YICTORY TAKES LONG-ESTABLISHED BOWIE HANDICAP UNDER HEAVY WEIGHT. Biff Crowd Views the Racing Mary Powell Wins at a Mile Again Campeon Arrives in Maryland Gossip of the Track. Baltimore, Mil., November 10. Emil Ilerzs sturdy handicap Jiorse Short Grass, added the Bowie Handicap to the list of brilliant victories lie has scored this year, when lie beat Gifford A. Cochrans Air Man, an added starter, by three-quarters of. a length in Iinilicos feature race this afternoon. Short Grass carried 12S pounds, came from behind, worked his way up on the extreme outside, finished fast and resolutely and was drawing clear at the end. Holiday set the pace with Berrilldon in close pursuit. The two raced like a team and led the others until entering the homestretch, where there was a general closing up. At the end botli the leaders tired badly and Berrilldon quit and finished last of all. There was some crowding in the last sixteenth nnd the stewards deliberated for some little time before the official sign was displayed. Fair Mae and Half Rock were the sufferers by the crowding. Another largo crowd turned out to witness the sport. The day was an ideal one for out-of-doors diversions. Well-matched fields went to the post in a majority of the races and interesting contests resulted. Mary Powell carried the Cochran colors to victory in tin: fourth race, in which she led from the start and was never bended. The conditions of this race called for racers of all ages :it one mile and two-year-olds finished first and third. In the sprint races at Laurel Mary Powell usually quit, but since she lias been going a mile route she lias shown to much better advantage. This is the second mile race she has won at Pimlico. Among the prominent visitors at Pimlico this afternoon were former Congressman Joseph Rhi-noch, Congressman George W. Loft, David Stevenson and Leander Sire. Jockey C. Jackson, who had the mount on Kilix, v.hlch fell at the water jump in the steeplechase, rode Turmoil on the flat in the fourth race. The stallion Campeon, donated through the breeding bureau of the Jockey Club to the Maryland Jockey Club, for the improvement of the breed of horses in the state of Maryland, arrived at Pimlico this morning and goes immediately to the Mover Hill Farm of James Giddings in Carroll County. Tlio stallion is by Alvescot Florite. II. W. Sage secured, by private purchase, from E. A. Burke the imported horse Quel Bonheur this morning. William Gartli tried out a number of the yearlings lie lias at Benning. Several of the band showed exceedingly well. Besides his own yearlings, Mr. Garth lias a number belonging to Bal Parr and E. 15. McLean. The entire band will be shipped to the Garth farm at Charlottesville, Va., shortly, where they will be wintered. Rnl Parr has purchased the jumper Robert Oliver from Lewis W. Garth. Robert Oliver won a couple of steeplechase stakes 011 the Canadian circuit last summer. Lon Forbes is confined to his room, suffering from neuritis. W. F. Martin, trainer for the Kentucky Stable, has arranged to ship Courtship and Sea Puss back to Kentucky tomorrow, to go into winter quarters at Walter S. Paynes farm. The remainder of the string will be sent to Bowie to finish the racing season. Phil T. Chinn and Henry McDaniel will sail on the steamship St. Louis tomorrow for England to purchase broodmares, yearlings and two-year-olds. Mr. Chinn has a big commission to execute for John A. Drake, who is coming back into racing next year on rather an extensive scale. T. J. Henley left for his home in New York tonight to remain over Sunday. Several of the R. T. Wilson horses will go to Bowie at the conclusion of the Pimlico meeting. G. W. Glick lias arranged to leave for Tijuana with his horses on Wednesday next. It is said that J. S. Berger of Chicago, lias been given an option on the ThornclilTe charter and the private track, owned by the Messrs. Davies, in the suburbs of Toronto, and work will be begun on the construction of a mile course next spring. Several Canadian and New York capitalists are interested in the project. A. N. Elrod, who supervised the mutuel department at both of the Devonshire Park meetings, was an arrival.
