WOOL WINDERS BROTHER WINS BIG RACE. The result of the Caulfield Cup is another triumph for English bloodstock, the winner of this valuable mile and a half handicap it was worth 5,000 sovereigns last year being Shepherd King, which won from Amata, Susonof and the usual big field. Shepherd King was bred by Col. K. W. Baird, and was got by Martagon St. Wcndeline. He is therefore a brother to the same; owners St. Legcr winner. Wool Winder. Although Shepherd King ran well on several occasions, he never succeeded in winning a race for Col. Baird, and was sold privately at Hie close of last year to go Australia, where he lias now distinguished himself by carrying off one of the chief events of the season. He was well backed, starting at 11 to 2 against, and his time, 2:30 i, is nearly three seconds faster than that of last years winner, Lavendo, which, by the way, was also an imported English horse by Cancer. An earlier son of Martagon. which likewise won big races over a distance of ground in Australia was Lilyveil, which, among other events, was victorious in the Sydney Cup. Shepherd King will doubtless, in due course, do well at the stud "down under." His elder brother. Wool Winder, is in Hungary, and Magic, another good son of Martagon, which defeated Bayardo for the Goodwood Cup, lias recently gone to the United States. The best representatives of the Martagon line of Bend Or left in this country are Mintagon, Buckwheat and Wuffy. The runner-up to Shepherd King for the Caulfield Cup, Amata, herself a winner of a number of good races, is a daughter of Wallace, one of Carbines best Australian-bred sons.
