NOTED AUSTRALIAN OWNER IS DEAD. The dcatli has recently taken place at Sydney of Mr. Dan OBrien, who was prominent on the Australian turf as the trainer, owner and introducer of Trenton and Carbine to Australia. Born sixty-eight years ago at Carlton Victoria, he became associated with bloodstock at Mari-byrnong Stud. He afterwards became a jockey, and it Is on record that lie rode Fishermans best racing son. Fishhook, when that eolt carried Mr. Hurtle Fishers rose and black stripes to victory in the Australian Jockey Clubs Champagne Stakes at Randwick in 1SC0. Increasing weight drove OBrien from the ranks of riders on the flat among the cross-country jockeys, and in that capacity lie went to New Zealand, where he soon established himself as a trainer and a rider over obstacles. One of the first horses lie raced there he named Fishhook, and adopted the rose and black colors of Mr. Fisher. With Tanibourini, Fishhook. Tasman and Freedom, OBrien won many of New Zealands big handicaps. He first came into wide notice as an owner in Australia in 1SS5 with Trenton, which carried a lot of New Zealand money in the Melbourne Cup, but was beaten. OBriens next great descent upon Australia was with Carbine, which came to Australia in 1SSS. Five years later he brought over Loyalty, with which he won several important weight-for-age races at Randwick. A little later lie bought a property at Randwick. During another sojourn in New Zealand OBrien successfully raced Multifid, one of his own breeding, and he brought Marauui back with him. Manum i was a disappointment at first, but eventually won the Caulfield Cup. The last race of importance won by OBrien was the Australian Jockey Club Gimcrack Stakes with Respect which he bred, in 190S.
