WINTER SEASON IS AT HAND TIJUANA MEETING WILL START BALL ROLLING BY OPENING TODAY. Meetings at Juarez, Havana and New Orleans to Follow in the Order Named More Stables for Winter Campaigns Than Usual. The North American winter racing season of 1910-1917 will be ushered in witli todays opening of the one hundred or more days of the Lower California Jockey Club at Tijuana, Mex., just across the international boundary from San Diego, Cal. Three other winter meetings have been announced. The second to open will be that of the Jockey Club Juarez, at Juarez, Mex., just over the Rio Grande from El Paso, Tex., where a meeting of one hundred or more days duration is scheduled to begin on Thanksgiving day, November 30. On December 0, the third of the winter meetings in which horsemen from this country are interested will begin at Oriental Park, in the suburbs of Havana, Cuba. The winter racing season will finally be in full swing when the meeting of the Business Mens Racing Association begins at the New Orleans Fair Grounds on January 1. This meeting is to continue for forty-four days, coming to a close 011 Mardi Gras da j, February 20. It seems likely that more than the usual proportion of the horses that have been engaged in racing iu the United States and Canada will be continued in training for winter racing. The winter meetings are more important and attractive than ordinarily, with greater opportunities for the better grade of horses to be raced profitably. Those patrons of racing speculatively inclined will be in a position to select the form of wagering that particularly appeals to them, if they so choose. At Tijuana there will be an open betting ring, with the bookmakers quoting odds on the old-fashioned slates. Juarez is to employ the mutuels exclusively, for the first time in the history of that track. At Havana there will lie open bookmaking and the mutuels as well. The New Orleans ring will be operated on the stakeholder plan, which lias given perfect satisfaction there for the past two meetings.
