GOOD RACING DESPITE COLD HALF-HOLIDAY CROWD ENJOYS THE CHILLY SPORT AT BOWIE. Brooltdale Handicap Falls to Fruit Cake, which Never Gives Her Backers Any Concern Gossip of the Track. Bowie. Mil., November 25. There was a touch of winter to the racing at Howie this afternoon and heavy wraps and overcoats were a necessity for comfort in the open grandstand. Notwithstanding this condition of affairs, the fact that it was the last Saturday of racing in this region for the year, resulted in the usual large half-holiday crowd making the trip to the track. The going had dried out Avell overnight and, as large and well-matched fields went to the post in every contest, good racing was the result. Two handicaps featured the card of seven races and in the Brookdale Handicap, which was for vo-year-ohls over the seven-eighths route. Fruit Cake had the easiest kind of victory. Although she carried top weight in the feature, Haynes took her to the front right after the start and at no time during the running was the result over in doubt as she was always under a pull ami won eased up by a length, with Bondage taking the place position from Dandy Dude by two aiid a half lengths. The other race of importance was the Southern Maryland Handicap, for two-year-olds and over, at one mile, and when Leocliares was scratched from the race, it made it appear a good thing for J. F. Sweeneys consistent gelding Hauberk. Tins form backers had so much confidence in the son of Martinet, that they sent him to the post an odds-on choice and he made good, winniug his fourth straight race here. As usual he was outpaced in the early running. Squeeler and Celto being the pacemakers to the stretch, where Kewessa showed in front. In the last eighth Hauberk closed up with his usual burst of speed and drew out to win easily by several lengths, while Kewessa had no trouble in beating Squeeler for the place money. Before the races today there was a sale of miscellaneous horses in training in the paddock, which resulted as follows: Brave, E. Utterback, 10; Senator Casey, Mrs. E. Arlington, 00; Elsie Bonero, M. Mitchell, 50; Peacock, B. Utterback, 05; Ash Can, Mr. Brooks, 80; Ben Frost, M. Keehever, S104; Porin, Dr. McCarthy, 05. Jockey W. Crump iode two winners during the afternoon, having the mounts on Napoleon and Ina Kay. Jockey R. Troxler announces that he will go to Tijuana at the end of the meeting and ride as a free lance. Emil Herz will ship his stable to Louisville at the close of the Bowie meeting and go into winter quarters at Churchill Downs. Owen Pons returned from Louisville today, where he attended the funeral of his brother, Francis J. Pons. He stated that the Pons yearlings, with the exception of two by Judge Wright, would be sold in the paddock at New Orleans during the winter meeting at that course. W. A. Burttschell. having received an offer to train for a prominent eastern owner next year, has decided to dispose of his stable of racers. This includes the good horses Fruit Cake, All Smiles, Christie and Phil Ungar. Joseph A. Murphy yesterday received letters from August Belmont, chairman of the Jockey Club, and S. C. Nuckols, Jr., secretary of the Kentucky Racing Commission, acknowledging the receipt of the protest of the Business Mens Racing Association in respect to the two-year-old rule and stating that the matter would be brought up at tiie next meeting of the organization.
