ENGLISH RACING STATISTICS OF 191G. Owners, Horses, Riders and Sires Which Filled the Leading: Positions. When, on Friday, November :i. Dark Opal won the last race of the Newmarket Houghton meeting, the Knglisli flat racing season of 1916 came to an end. Among the winning owners it left the Manchester newspaper publisher, E. Hulton, far in advance of his competitors, his fine New Derby and New Oaks winner, Fifinella, shining brightly in the equine firmament, while his fleet two-year-olds, Margarethal and Knutsfonl, won valuable stake races, which helped materially to make him this years leader on the British turf. Lord Derby won the One Thousand Guineas witli Canyon and finished second to Mr. Hulton. The Duke of Portland, unexpectedly, carried off the most valuable prize of the year, when his colt Cannobie won the Jockey Club Stakes and, solely because of this, is in third place. The only American owner standing well in the winning list is John Sanford, whose Nassovian was one of the star three-year-olds of 1910. The owners credited with having won .,000 or more, their number of races won and their stable earnings are here given. King Georges lesser total leading in accordance with custom: Races Amount Owner. May 4 0,100 Cannobics victory in the Jockey Club Stakes and two lesser victories sufficed to give him the leadership among the money-winning horses. Up to his success in the big race he was deemed moderate .Huong the English three-year-olds, and even now the critics there seem loth to give him due credit. Put he must be a pretty good colt. He beat Sanctum and later on Sanctum won the Cesarewltch Handicap easily. Second to him in money avou was the Two Thousand Guineas winner Clarissiinus, followed in order by the other three-year-olds, Can-von. Fifinella and Nassovian. In fact the young horses quite monopolised the situation in England this year, only one older than three years having won as much as ,000. All the other winners of that amount or more, are three-year-olds and two-year-olds. Of the latter age North Star is the leading winner. According to report he has been bought by Mr. A. K. Macomber for 0,000 and his debut in American racing next year, will be : awaited with eager interest. Among the three- j ear-olds Hurry On was quite the star of the year. This big colt won all of bis races, with such ease, 1 that competent judges are inclined to rank him i Avith the greatest race horses of all time. If he remains sound lie probably has a great career awaiting him. The horses which won ,000 or i more were the following: i Races Amount Horse, Col. Sex, Age and Pedigree. Won. Won. His sons and daughters have now been in racing six years, and in that time have won a total of S410.0S5. The St. Simon liorse, Chaucer, was second to Polymelus, and the young sire, Sunstar, third. Donoghue has now led Englands jockey list for three consecutive years. Chiids rode, for E. Hulton and so had the guidance of the remarkable filly Fifinella, when she won the New Detby and the New Oaks. Darling, and H. S. Persse. The sums earned are, of course, nothing to be compared with ire-war times. Other trainers who may be said to have done well under the circumstances include .1. Butters, P. P. Gilpin, R. W. Colling, R. Day, E. G. De Mestre. C. V. Tabor, J. Green, and S. Pickering, each of whom topped 5,000.
