SAD SAM A LONG-PRICED WINNER. His Backers Get 43.80 for in Mutuel Record Pay-Off at Juarez. El Paso, Texas, December 28. When Sad Sam won the second race here this afternoon, his fevr backers got 43.80 for in the mutuel machines, a record1 pay-off at this track. Sad Sam is a bay gelding by John F. Kate Rogers and belongs to C. L. Benbrook. He had started but twice previously and, in his first race, was left at the post. On Christmas Day he was in a five-eighths of a mile race against Hondo. Red Deer and others, and ran for a quarter of a mile head and head with Lycin and Hondo, then dropped back and finally finished last, beaten nearly twenty lengths. Today Sad Sam was placed in a four and a half furlongs race against such good ones ns Deckhand and Bcssanta, and he not only led all the way, but equaled the track record of 55. At that he only beat Deck-baud a head.
