CANADA TO LETMURPHTf GO? REPORT THAT FRANCIS NELSON WILL BE ASSOCIATIONS PRESIDING STEWARD. Action of Official at New Orleans Regarding Two-Year-Old Rule of Eastern Jockey Club Held Responsible for Contemplated Action. Are the Canadian Racing Associations to let Joseph A. Murphy go as its representative steward at the racing meetings in Canada next year, as the result of Judge Murphys action in regard to the eastern Jockey Clubs two-year-old rule? A Montreal dispatch states that Francis Nelson, of the Toronto 5 lobe, and well-known as both a racing authoritv and a race track official, is to be the Canadian Associations stewards next year. No explanation is made of the course for the contemplated action, but is is practically certain that it is due to Judge Murphys leadership in the movement at New Orleans to race two-year-olds before April 1, despite the eastern Jockey Clubs rule-book injunctions against it. It is inferred that the Canadian officials are not especially cordial toward the Jockey Club ruin itself, but at the same time they do not want to invite any possible form of discrimination that might possibly result from keeping Judge Murphy as their official representative. Among turfmen generally the action of Judge Murphy at New Orleans, as well as that of the horsemen who have agreed to race their two-year-olds in the early season races, has not been interpreted as "hurling defiance" at the Jockey Club; on the contrary, as merely a decision of owners to race certain of their youngsters before April 1, and thereby make these particular youngsters ineligible on Jockey Club tracks in their two-year-old form. The Montreal dispatch is as follows: Montreal, Que., December 2C. It is rumored that when the Canadian Racing Associations holds ita meeting to select and arrange the dates for next seasons racing that there will be several changes made in the officials to be appointed by the associations. It is more than likely that Francis Nelson of Toronto, one of the best known racing men of Canada, and who served his apprenticeship many years ago as a race track official, will be chosen to fill the position of steward, representing tin? Canadian Racing Associations on the various tracks under its jurisdiction. This position was filled u year ago by Joseph A. Murphy, an American. Should Francis Nelson be appointed to this position it will mean the selection of another judge for the tracks of the Canadian Racing Associations circuit. No one has yet been suggested for this position. In many places the judges are chosen by the club and not by the racing association, as other officials are. It is likely that Jospeh McLennan will be made clerk of the scales, as a year ago, while there may not be a change in the position, of patrol judge. Should Francis Nelson replace Joseph Murphy it will mean the naming of another steward at Dorval and Ottawa, where Francis Nelson filled these positions.
