PIMLIC0 SURPLUS FOR IMPROVEMENTS. According to Treasurer Charles E. McLane of the Maryland Jockey Club, there is to be no melon for charities this year from the 1916 earnings of the club. It had been the custom to give to charity all the net earnings after charges had been deducted and six per cent allowed to the stockholders. The surplus was used in improvements, is the general statement. There is to be no detailed statement published of last years finances of the club, as has been the practice. It was the impression of the public that the operations at Pimlico last year were more profitable than ever, as it was believed the betting through the mutuel machines had been greater. But Mr. McLane said: "We simply spend all our surplus in improvements to the Pimlico track grounds and approaches and have nothing to give this year."
