EARLY CAMPAIGN FOR MAC0MBER HORSES. Trainer Walter Jennings Expects to Have Starters in Nearly Every Big Stake This Year. Bf Ed Cole. New York. Fel ruary 4.— Walter Jennings, who has charge of the Mareaahcr horses ai Charleetea, S. C. is enthusiastic about Charleston as a wintir training ground. "Every horse at the track looks good." said he. "and they will be ready for an early campaign, probably in better fix than many of those wintered elsewheie. The weather has been bad at times, but as the track is constructed of sandy soil and well-drained, .ill the horses have been able to work. There is ipiite a colony of horsemen and horses at Charleston, there being 175 racers in the track stalls. "I am going to begin an early campaign and hope-to have starters in nearly every big stake run in thia country this year. One cannot say I am short of either material or riders, having fifty-one horses ami three good riders in Loftus. Huxton and Phillips. Loftus is much lighter today than he has been in s.i.ietime. weighing only 122 pounds as he walks around. "Heiag well-equipped with l« th horses and riders, all I ask tor now is a bit of good luck, as that is the dominant factor in horse racing. A-man has to have a whole lot of luck, to win races, as well as good bateea and riders. Mr. Macomber is goins to build a tahh* at Helmont Hark that will cciipse anything yet attempted and Ill have plenty of material on hand in New York when the seaoa opens." Neariy all the best steeplechasers are b ing wintered at Aiken. S. .. DatVC being about seventy-five in number, the property of Ambrose Clark chiefly, who is going extt nsively into the crosscountry business tlii— seas. in. Others who have ■ horses there are J. K. Davis. H. Y. Sage. !•. S. : Von Stride. T. Hitchcock and Nash Turner. Most of the horses will be shipped east for the early spring meetings, as they are forward in their preparation.
