LORD LONSDALES BREEDING EXPERIMENT. The London Morning Post says that Lord Lonsdale has newly -imported a half dozen mares from France of the Pen heron breed, and that he has purchased the thoroughbred hors" Staplete a by Polynielas — Pes Beise to mate with them, in order to produce horses suitable for army and general purposes. Staph ton was a useful horse both on the flat and over hurdles, and last March at Gat-wick he was beaten by a half length only by that smart hurdle racer. Water Bed. The Pen-herons with which he is to be mated may be of light, medium sr the heavy varie-tv. As a rule, they are gray in color, and the heavier variety are not unlike the Suffolk Punch in appearance. While disclaiming any hostility to the Shire and Clydesdale breeds. Lord Lonsdale holds that the war has proved these too delicate for active service. For that belief his lordship has good reasons, at all events as regards the Shire breed. The Pcrcherons an- Sappessd to have derived their gray color from the gray Arabian horses imported into France nearly 100 yean ago. but. although they should have- derived hardiness from their Arab ancestry, one or two veterinary authorities hold that the breeel is lacking in robustness. The thoroughbred touch, however, may remedy any such suggested failing. Lord Lonsdales experiment, iu any case, will bo Watched with interest.
