NOTES OF THE RECENT NEWMARKET SALE. Mr. Sanford Credited With Securing One of the Real Bargains of the Occasion. Foreign buyers were not so much in evidence at Newmarket as they have been of late, though oncer two lots will go out of the country. The three-year-old sister to The Tetrarch goes to America, and Ali Bey to India. The Duke of Westminsters lot sold remarkably well, including Shadowland. and some of the yearlings. Presumably Ali Bey is 1 only destined for racing, as breeding in India is conducted on a limited scale, therefore it is to be hoped that he will prove more amenable to the gate over there than lie- was here. Sale Aftermath. Sir William Tate-m. who bids fair to have one of the biggest and most important string of horses in training, was one of the principal buyers, among his purchases being the two-year-olds Koyal Diamond, by Swynford: Tlie Midshipniit-. by Steel fast: Lady Sibell. by Swynford: Romero, by Santry; Ali-gan. by Santry and Scatwell, by Marcovil. The last three were out of Mr. James Buchanans band, which also includes tin- 3.000 guineas yearling Thermogene. which now goes for a thousand less to Alec Taylor. It would seem, however, that Mr. Buchanans retirement is only to be partial, and from the fact that Hurry On and Ecurie are to be trained at Clarehaven Lodge, it is fair to infer that Mr. Livock was acting on instructions in buying for him. out of Mr. Neumanns lot, the two-year-olds Starbeam and Rienzi, a really beautiful colt by Roi Herode. ArgeS was said to have been better tried as a two-year-old than Figaro, but neither fulfilled expectations, and Capt. Tuthill may have secured a better bargain in the former than diet Mr. OConnor in Figaro, which goes to Russia. Although a well-grown, good-looking horse, he was not reliable when racing. Both are sons of Sun-ridge, which was visited in France by their respective dams. Mr. Sanfords Good Bargain. One of the most promising two-year-olds sold was a half-sister to Redfern. by The Curragh. in which Mr. Sanford sectored a bargain for Butters stable, and, unless I am mistaken. Mr. A. Patman got good value in Accriugton. a t lire-.-year-old that only ran once last year, but did well after beginning slowly. Mr. Lionel Robinson got Lauius and Shadowland. and unless, as is quite i ossible. Elk-ington is destined to make- a jumper, 1 would rather have Elsdon at the price than the son of Symington. I cannot regret that Renaissance and Collet Monte were not sold, for I hope that they will produce more good racers to carry the black and blue cap. No doubt appropriate reserves were placed on them, but the demand for brood mares was rather slack; otherwise Grecian Bend, by Pericles, in foal to Ampelion. would not have passed under the modest reserve of 400 guineas. I understand she will next be mated with Spearmint. All things considered, it was really a good sale, and revealed a state of affairs which must be encouraging to breeders. — "Vigilant" in London Sportsman.
