KENTUCKY DERBY ENTRIES BIG RACE OF THIS YEAR HAS ATTRACTED SEVENTY-FIVE NOMINATIONS. Campfire and Hourless Absentees, but North Star, Harry Kelly, Westy Hogan and Four of Whitney Stars Are Entered. Louisville. Ky.. Mnil 10. — Seventy-five of the nuist royally bred thoroughbreds of tin- nation have been named to start in the forty -second Kentucky Derby, which will lie run May 12 at Churchill Downs. Of t!ic seventy-five forty-three are from the east, the stables of Harry Payne Whitney. A. K. Macomber. Andrew Miller. James Batter, . K. G. Billings and others of note being in the list. One-third, or twenty-five of the nominees are imported, the international angle in the race being even ni-ne predominant than last year. All of the imported horses but one comes from Fngland. There is one French -bred colt in the list. Iiji Chevesne, Which is named by A. K. Macomber. A. K. Macomber, whose stable ranks second to none in the country, is the heaviest nominator, he having seven strings to his bow. The Chief arrow in his quiver is the three-year-old North Star, for which Mr. Macomber paid a biff price With the idea of winning th« 1917 Kentucky Derby. There is some regret over the fact that two of the eastern racks were not named. Hornless, the Bcbnont star and Cainpiire. leading money-winning t wo-year-olds of MM, are not in the list. Hour-less, it is said, would hardly come to hand in time lor the big race and owner Wilson was unwilling to begin so early on Campfire in trying to get him in trim for a gruelling race over a mile and a quarter route so early in the year. However, the race has the earmarks of being the greatest in its history and manager M. .1. Winn, who is now in the east looking after the interests of the Laurel and other courses lie has under his care, is highly Plated over the prospect of one of the greatest contests ever witnessed niuon-j three-year-olds in the » west. Mr. Whitney Names Four. Harry Payne Whitney, who i- the only owner to ever score in the Kentucky Derby with a filly. Kegrot. has four in the race. He named Hwfa. Rollringer. Tumbler and Rickety. These four are high-class ones and Mr. Whitney has hopes of repeating his PJlTi conquest. Andrew Miller will send Ticket to Kentucky early in the season to be prepared for the big race. He lias enjoyed only fair racing luck in Kentucky, but be believes that in Ticket he lias a three year-old that, will be aide to airy weight and go a ling route with the liest of them. l. K. ;. Billings, whose entry into the thoroughbred world caused a good deal of caustic comment from trotting horsemen, who hated to see him taking interest in any other branch of the sport, has four in the race. lie a:id Frederick Johnson are interested in the quartet, which will race under colors here this spring. The best one of them is said to be Omar Khayyam, a chestnut colt by Have*. This son of Marco lias worked faster at New Orleans than any of the horses there have run in their races. Kentucky is well represented in the race. Midway. Berlin. Westy Ilogan and a few others of less note, have been named. Of them Westy Hogan aud Midway are most frequently mentioned by the railbirds as ii,,ving more than a passing chance to score in the rich stake. John W. Schoir. who lias owned and raced one of the leading stables in America for many years, has his Iltimus colt, Harry Kelley. in the list. IJjis youngster, since he has been broken of his bad acting at the post, looms up as a dangerous contender ami the Tennessee horseman is in hopes of winning the race. He has had uncanny luck in the past in rich stakes. If Harry Kelly wins, it will be the first time for a Volunteer State horse to win the Derby since MM, when • Donau. owned by William Uesst, of Xa i.ville. won it. Easterners Lucky in Recent Years. Since 1!10 the cist lias had better luck than the Kcntuckiais and other westerners in the big stake. That year Donau m:i for Gorst. while in 1911 Meridian scored for I. F. Carman, and the east repeated in 1012 when Worth, the Hallwabecn crack won. In 1*11 Douerail. 91 to 1 shot, beat the eastern rack Ten Point, and then ill 1914 the little freak gelding Old Rosebud won with ease in rt : ifd time. That made it two in a row for Kentucky. Harry Payne Whitney then shattered tradition in winning with Regret. In MM John San-ford, the Amsterdam. N. _Y.. turfman brought George Smith dawa from Hurricanna Stud and ■eared in a mild drive with Star Hawk from the Ma -.nilier stable. This year the race is even more open with North Star. Hwfa, Midway and Harry Kelly enjoyiag favoritism. The addition of 5,000 to the race this year by the New Louisville Jockey Club has proved a golden magnet with enough strength to draw the bad iu tie- nation. Colonel Winn believes he now has an ideal setting for the spring meeting at Chun-hill Down-. With several other rich staki ■ on the program it will be enough to hold the stirs in Kentucky to the conclusion of the meetings in K ntiicky. Oraat Hugh Browae, who has been cutting a wide swath of late in the turf world, is sending three to Kentucky to be prepared for the Derby. All three of them are imported and no line has been s ■ mad on their ability. ", rge WingLeH. proprietor of the Nevada Stock Iaiin. is going to bring his star three-year-old to Kentucky this spring. He has named Square set in the Derby ai:d. if he runs up to expectations. doubtless will make a creditable showing. • A half dozen fillies were named in the 1917 Derby, forty s-veii colts and eighteen geldings.
