t ~ f I REDUCTION IN TIME RECORDS EFFECTED SINCE 1880 TO THE PRESENT TIME AT ALL DISTANCES + 4. Of the American running records of the present, the longest standing is Ethelberts two miles and a quarter in 8:48%, made in 1888. That record, when made, represented a reduction of the record for that distance as it stood ill 1SN0 and 1888 of a fraction more than s, ven seconds, the record of 1888 and 1MB8 being that made by Springbok and Preakacsa in their celebrated dead heat race for the Saratoga Cup in 1875. Ethelbert was a grand race horse and his record may stand as long as did that of the famous dead heaters. The table lielow gives the progressive steps by which faster and faster records at standard distances have lieen made since 1888 and. in a uay. reflect! the improvement ill the breed of thoroughbred horses, which undoubtedly has heea effected in the last four decades. That some pari of the redaction in time records is due to faster tracks is beyond question, but it is equally true that the average of our horses possess a greater measure of -peed than their predecessors of 1SS0. There is quite interesting food for thought in this table: Present Present American Hoc. Rep. Rec. Ree. Dist. Rec. Holder. A. Wt. Track. Date. Uecd. 1SS0. UN, HUM.
