NOTED ENGLISH SIRE IS DEAD. The Duke of Portland has sustained an appreciable losa by the death of his well-known stallion William the Third. Foaled in MM, he was by St. Simon — Gravity, and was a high-class performer when on the turf. As a three-year-old he won the Newmarket Stakes. Hurst Park Lennox Stakes. Haher Stakes, and other races, and run second to Volodyovski for the Derby. At four years he showed great form, among the event, lie accounted for being the Gold Cup and Alexandra Plate at Ascot. Doncaster Cup and the Liwther and Limekiln Stakes at N. wmarket. and in his last race was seeond for the Jockey Club Cap. At the stud he was the sire of such good horses as Winki-pap, Willonyx. King William. Huttleaxe. Merry .lack. Ardentrive. Wrinkh r. Bill and Coo, Rose-worthy. Willaura. Trois Temps. Nassau. Roseland, Pilliowinkle, Williams Pride. Ronde de Nuit a winner in France, and many others which won race* of more or less merit. Several of his nrogeny are uow tu this country.
