GOVERNMENT TAX ON PARI-MUTUELS. Way and Means Committee Would Levy Ten Per Cent on Wagers Mado Under that System. Washington. D. C. April 88. — A sub -committee of the Ways and Means Committee of the House of Keprcsentatives is considering a tax of ten per cent on all bets made under the pari-mutuels system. Yesterday it was said that the committee had practically decided to give a favorable report to the measure and allow it to come up in the House for discussion. This will be regarded as a purely war tax and no effort will be made to retain it after the increased expenses incidental to the international conflict have ceased to exist. It is but a part of the program which has been outlined by Secretary of the Treasury McAdoo. for added taxes, which are expected to yield more than ,800,000 annually.
