PROSPECTS OF DOUGLAS PARK RACING. Dates Set for the Running of the Stake Races — Kentucky Handicap Horses at Work. Louisville. K.v.. May .1 Manager John Hach-meister of the Douglas Park Jockey Club, announced here today that the Kentucky Handicap, at a mile and a quarter, for three year olds and over, will lie run at Douglas Park on Saturday . June 2. tin-second Saturday of the thirteen-day meeting at his track. There will be lour stakes at Douglas Park this spring, to he run on the following dates: Saturday, .May 24, apeaiag day. the Speculation Stakes. Wednesday. May 30, the Memorial Handicap. Saturday, June L the Kentucky Handicap. Saturday, June , closing day, the Spring Trial Stakes. The Speculation Stakes has a selling clause and is for three-year-olds and over, at a mile and a sixteenth. The Memorial Day feature is a three-quarters dash, for three year-olds and over, always attracting the best sprinters in training in this section. The Spring Trial Stakes, is for two-year-olds, at five-eighths, and it is generally the Brat race at that distance for the horses of that age. It is deferred until the closing day of the meeting to allow the trainers ample time to bring their charges to that state of perfection necessary to go that distance without risk of injury. For the same reason, the Cincinnati Trophy at three-quarters, always is run late in the Latonia meeting. Three Saturdays for Douglas Park. Churchill Downs will have twelve days of racing to begin with the Kentucky Derby and close with the Kentucky Oaks which is run on the Friday prior to Douglas Parks opening. Douglas Park has three Saturdays this spring, having drawn an extra day of racing, to compensate in a measure for Churchill Downs being given the preference in dates that the opening of the local racing implies. While a heavy track has militated against the showing of horses in training here and at Lexington for tin- Kentucky Handicap the past week, enough has been seen, not only of the three year -olds, but also of the older horses, to indicate that there will be a groat field to go to the post in the handicap, which, with the forfeit from entries now indicated, probably will be worth dose to 418,444 gross. Such superior weight carriers as Colonel Yeitnie, Pif Jr.. and others, which have had actual racing, will meet Uoamer. now here and lining all that could be expected, as well as the cream of the three year -olds. A better line will be obtainable on the outlook for this race as soon as the main eligibles have been seen under colors over the local courses. Boam-er will be started in several sprint races here as a conditioner. Itst year he was a bit short and finished second to Ed Crump in the handicap. Ed Crump is now in the Macomber stable and is being trained, as well as Boots ami Dodge, with an eye to the Kentucky Handicap, which is the richest stake that they will be able to race for this year.
