LADIES DAY AT GRAND RAPIDS. Good-Sized Crowd Witnesses Closely Contested Finishes Big Latonia Contingent Arrives. Grand Rapids, Mich., July 5. Ladies day contributed to maintain the attendance at Comstock Park to fairly good proportions. In the crowd were many who had never witnessed a running race and their interest in the sport was marked. The wagering was again light, but this is a prospecive field and will in time be a splendid racing point. The people seem to take to the change from the harness racing to the runners. The management this afternoon indicated its entire satisfaction over results and are optimistic as to. the success of the sport in these parts. An accident which came in the opening race, but resulted in nothing serious, gave the spectators a big thrill. The mishap occurred when the horses had passed the half-mile post. Mazhik, ridden by T. Henry, was well up in the field of twelve at this point, but, getting caught in a jam, hefell heavily. Circulate, which was a distant trailer and ridden by A. W. Carroll, could not avoid the prostrate horse and fell over him. Beyond a shaking up, both riders escaped injury, but cancelled further engagements for the afternoon. Close finishes marked the running of most of the dashes, excepting the case of Olgn Star, an overwhelming choice, which accounted for the mile and a quarter race in the easiest kind of fashion.. There was a big delegation from Latonia this morning, including two additional, cars of racers, variously owned. William Ryan of Chicago was among the visitors. He is going to the lakes on a fishing trip. Jockey Pool will accept mounts here. There is a woeful lack of good riders. Foucon and Eddie Dominick are among the comebacks that have piloted winners here.
