j I S 11 a S 5 , " i c i , . , " . . , i , , SLEDMERE YEARLINGS FOR AMERICA. Entire Crop of Englands Foremost Breeding Farm Bought to Race Here. Acting on behalf of a New York client, the British Bloodstock Agency have just purchased the Sledmere yearlings, seventeen in number from Sir Mark Sykes, M. P. The name of the buyer has not yet been disclosed. This important transaction is a direct consequence of the prohibition of racing by the war cabinet. The outlook for English and Irish breeders who have yearlings to sell this summer is doubtful in the extreme. Before the government interfered with racing seven weeks ag , ago, the depreciation in the value of bloodstock owing to the war amounted to about GO per cent. How much further that depreciation has been carried the. coming sales will show. Breeders will be agreeably surprised if the market has any life left in it. In these circumstances the representatives of Sir Mark Sykes who is abroad felt compelled to accept the offer they received for the Sledmere yearlings in order to guard themselves against a possible catastrophe. Of the English studs where thoroughbred yearlings are reared for sale that at Sledmere, near Mai ton, Yorkshire, has for many years been regarded as the premier establishment. It was there that the Derby winners, Doncaster nnd Spearmint were bred. To enumerate all the high-class performers that have come from this famous Yorkshire stud would occupy much space. Some indication of the reputation enjoyed by the product of Sledmere can, however, be given by a statement showing the prices they have made when sold by auction during the last ten years: Yearlings Total Yield. It is generally agreed by those who have had the privilege of inspecting these yearlings that, regarded as a whole, they are the best-bred and best-looking batch ever seen in the Sledmore paddocks. At least a half dozen of them are absolutely first-class. It will be noted that twelve of them are fillies, and in the fullness of time these dozen youngsters will constitute a group of brood mares which any stud master would be proud to own. One may venture to doubt whether a more covotable consignment of thoroughbreds lias ever left England. It may be mentioned that the fillies dams Veneration II., Honora, and Stolen Kiss are exceptionally good ones. It so happens that Veneration II. and Stolen Kiss have been barren the last two seasons, and so no produce from them can be offered before 1920. London Sportsman. A guinea is .04 in our money. It follows that the average of the Sledmere yearlings for the ten years quoted above was 1917.sh,881.20. Veneration II. is the dam of Craganour, Glorvina, Nassovian and Mr. John Sanfords 0,000 filly Homage, now a two-year-old, with no opportunity to race.
