: , a. WHAT STARTLING AND HIS STABLEMATES ACCOMPLISHED FOR R. F. CARMAN DURING THE YEAR i 4 The stable of II. F. Carman had a fairly prosperous season in 1917, due mainly to the winnings of Startling, The son of Marta Santa Country Fraud earned ,234 of the .7,970 credited to the stable, and, in addition, he has the distinction of winning two stake races the Chester Selling Stakes at Havre de Grace and the Liberty Loan Handicap at Laurel. Startling also was a starter in the Hollis Selling Stakes at Relmont Park, but finished second to Gloomy Gus in a head finish. Startling went wide at the stretch turn, which probably defeated him for first money. The old Lissak gelding, G. M. Miller, and King Raggot had a nose finish for second honors in .the Carman string. The former had slightly the best of it. winning ,210 to ,132 for the Peep oDay colt. The remainder of the stable winnings were divided between seven horses.
