N0TTER TO RIDE ESC0BA IN DERBY Crack Jockey Signs Up to Pilot K. D. Alexanders Crack Colt in Kentuckys Most Coveted Race. Louisville. Ky.. April 15. — Jockey Joe Notter, one of the most experienced and capable riders in this country, will pilot Kenneth I. Alexanders Escoba in the Kentucky Derby. This was definitely decided upon yesterday morning, when Notter and John S. Ward, trainer of the colt, readied an agreement at Douglas Park, entirely satisfactory to both. Notter fron w on will gallop Escoba in his work and have the mount on him in any of his starts at Lexington in advance of the Derby. Mr. Ward has lieen liesiegcd by jockeys seeking the coveted honor of piloting the crack colt in his Derby engagement and, in deciding to engage Notter. he Ixdieves he has secured quite the best rider obtaiuahle. Notter. however, was not one that sought the engagement. The question of who was to lie selected as Es-cohas rider had been hanging fire for a long time and, now that a rider of Notters ability has lieen named, the colts legion of admirers, comfortable and secure in the knowledge that he will be handled by as good a rider as there is on the American turf, will sit back smilingly and patiently waiting for the verdict. Notter was free to accept this engagement, inasmuch as he had some time ago severed his connection with James Rowe, trainer for II. P. Whitney, for whom he had ridden for over ten years. Notter rode Regret in the Wltftney colors in 1915. when that filly won the Derby and he also had the mount on Dominant, also from the Whitney stable, when the Whitney entry ran unplaced in 1910. Notter maintains pleasant relations with his former emplover, James Rowe, and is of the opinion that Mr. Rowe will surely send Rosie OGrady and one other eligible to Churchill Downs to compete in the Derby. F. Robinson, the stables regular rider, will lie here to have the mount on the entry that trainer Rowe considers has the last chance in the big race.
