S. H. VELIES BREEDING OPERATIONS Kansas City Manufacturer Has Half Dozen Mares in Stud at Thomas Piatts Brookdale Farm. Lexington, Ky.. April 15. — S. H. Velie. the Kansas City manufacturer of plows and automobiles, and R. McCoy, his trainer, were here this week to see a half-dozen mares which Mr. Velie has quartered at Thomas Piatts Brookdale Farm. The only mare of the six that thus far has produced is Florin, the seven-year-old daughter of Hamburg and Fiesole, by Goldfinch, dam the famous Firenze, by Glenelg. Florin has a magnificent yearling son by Fair Play, and by the same sire she has at foot a well-formed filly. This spring she was mated with Broomstick, inasmuch as Regret, the only filly ever to win the Kentucky Derby, is by Broomstick — Jersey Lightning, a daughter of Hamburg. Iidy Hildreth. a thirteen-year-old daughter of Golden Garter and Parabola, by Sir Modred — Parable, by Candlemas, is due soon to foal to Candlemas. Lady Teresa, a six-year-old daughter of Star Shoot and Maribel, by Hindoo, has been mated with Delhi, while Star Berta has been to the court of Ballot. Star Berta is eight years old and is a sister to Leo Skolny and Northern Light. Mr. Velie has not decided unon the stallion or stallions for the five-year-old Blue Cap, by Hastings — Blue Jacket, by Whistle Jacket, and six-year-old Marion Rose II.. by Bearcatcher — Marion Rose, by Bal-gowan. Neither has he made up his mind about a mate for Lady Hildreth. Trainer McCoy says that Serenade, the twelve-year-old daughter of Handsel and The Charmer, which Mr. Velie has at his Missouri farm, is one of the best nolo ponies in the world and for that reason she has not lieen bred. Captain Velie. son of the owner, used her with great success before the declaration of war. Should the war be prolonged, however. Serenade will be sent to the stud. Mr. Velie is hopeful that a bill under which racing may be conducted in Missouri with legalized betting may be passed at the next session of the legislature, in which event he will establish a large stud in his home state.
