BIG CROWD SEE DERBY WORK-OUTS Freecutter, Sun Briar, Nelsweep and Jay Bird Given Sharp Work — Colonel Vennie Is Injured. Louisville. Ky., April 13.— The biggest crowd of racing enthusiasts since tlic advent of spring was at Churchill Downs yesterday morning to watch the work-outs. The best move was recorded by George J. Longs Derhv colt Freecutter, which worked a mile in 1:4S%. He worked the distance in the following fractions— 24%. 30, 130%, 1:16*3, 1:30, going the full mile in 1:43%. Willis Sharne Kilmers pair. Sim Briar and Nelsweeep. were given an "opener" in preparation for a more arduous move at one mile. They worked together three-eighths of a mile in 37. and after being pulled up Sun Briar veered toward the outside rail at. the head of the stretch, giving the s|ieetators the impression that he was going wide during his work-out. which was not the case. The best move at Douglas Park was shown by I. W. Schorrs Derby colt. Jay Bird, which went three -quarters of a mile in 1:14, a new mark for the season. The colt showed a disposition to get away from his rider. E. Pool, who had all he could do to check his speed. The five-year-old Colonel Vennie, the star of the Jefferson Livingston stable, in charge of Mose Gold-blatt. struck himself in his stall a few nights ago and injured his right forefoot. The injury, although not serious, will prevent the horse from filling his stake engagements at Lexington. When the stables shipment of twenty head was forwarded today to Ijexington Colonel Vennie was left behind at Douglas Park in charge of William Covington, who has nine other of the stables horses in his keeping. John J. Troxler came over yesterday from Lexington to inspect his good three-year-old filly. Fern Handley. which has been in the care of Dick Williams since last fall. He was well pleased with her appearance and will shortly transfer her to Lexington, where Rhymer, his only other horse, is now in training. Fern Handley won the Golden Rod Stakes at Churchill Downs last fall and is now about ready for this seasons campaign.
