OUR FOREMOST BREEDERS J. E. Madden, Master of Hamburg Place, Surpasses All Others. His Wonderful Record for Past Two Years Interesting and Unique Compilation. In 1917 lwrsos bred by John E. Madden at his bis Hamburg Place breeding establishment, wfin 33-1 races. In 1918 his corresponding representation was Hi:, races, :i total of 517 races won. No other American breeder closely approaches this showing, lint no other breeding farm had anything like the number of brood mares in use at Hamburg Place. H. P. Whitney was second with 295 races won in the two years by horses which first saw the light of day on his breeding farm, and August Belmont tlurd with 2SS races won by Ids Nursery Karm-bred stock. It is interesting to note that stock bred in England by English breeders and sold to American owners won 452 races over our tracks in the same two years, while French horses bred by French owners won 143, Irish -bred horses taking thirty-five. Horses bred abroad by Messrs. Whitney, Helmont. Sanford. Duryea. Mackay. Thome. Widener and Mackay and Carroll and brought here for sale or racing are given separately. The fact that these foreign-bred horses won collectively 764 races in the two years shows what an important factor they have become in our racing. This compilation of what the horses from one various breeding establishments have done in the, essential matter of winning races should be an. exhibit of interest to breeders, but more especially is of interest to the large number of owners who depend upon purchases for the replenishment of? their stables. It certainly shows them in mass where the winners come frniu. ... M Breeder;- " "" 1917. 1918. Total. John K..
